Meet Pierre Martin of Venice Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pierre Martin

Hi Pierre, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was raised in Paris, France, studied towards an associate degree in photography and design at E.F.E.T. in Paris, followed by a stint at Viva Press Agency under the supervision of the late photographer / co-founder Martine Franck, all the while studying music with a similar interest, leading me to multiple recording and performance collaborations.

This eventually led me to the West Coast, where not only the recording studio scene is -still- plenty, but also where photography opportunities abound, be they on a mere observational level, or in association with portrait sessions, editorial projects as well as commercial endeavors and landscape photography.
Being one always attracted to the outdoors from a young age, I do find Los Angeles to be offering a good balance, or let’s call it a fair compromise between city and nature.

Nowadays, music and photography are equally on the forefront of my professional and creative endeavors.
Alternating both happens to be refreshing when one avenue may lack motivation, but as of lately combining the two in the form of more artistic creations (slideshows + music) make even more sense. Such future installations are in my mind at the moment, besides the obvious internet / social media representations.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Struggles will always be there when pushing boundaries, but going over the hurdles make the efforts well worth it.
I was born lucky enough with access to practice extreme sports, and the parallel does exist here.
Group efforts are nothing short of being in relationships with people, (sometimes too many, and not always by one’s choice), but great acquaintances have been made in the process, and then some..
No matter what, I never expect results to come easy, since the learning curve is never ending, more so as I expand my horizons, be they musical or visual, and in combination.
Also, my entourage for the most part is evolving in similar parallel pathways, so it is inspirational in pushing each others.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I photograph, with a penchant for black and white, with a definite interest in cinematic esthetics, whilst finding / creating a story around a situation or person based on communication, or just sometimes a plain visual observation.
I also write music, record bass tracks for very diverse recording artists as well as tackle the technical aspects of audio mixing / editing / mastering.
I am definitely an ear for people, and very often will a project starts with a conversation, which sometimes has nothing to do with where it will lead us.
And this precisely is the exciting part, in that we begin is often defined by the surprise of a newly acquired relationship.
Meeting my mentors in many fields has always been a joy, even more so getting respect from them of course.
Being multi-dimensional in my creative endeavors makes me probably different from most artists I encounter, as many seem to limit themselves -and often excel- at only one thing. I truly believe inspiration comes easy when one’s mind is open to multiple creative tools, as they are feeding each other.

What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is to stay true. Obviously to oneself, others, but also in the creative approach.
It is actually easy to be original, as long as we are detached from the perception and constraints of commercial applications.
The task to convince the rest of the world we are worth the interest is entirely ours, and then a little help of course cannot hurt..
