Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Martin.
Phillip, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up in music. My father is a bass player who had influenced one of the biggest bassists in LA. I took to the drums and by the time I was in high school, I was writing music and running the school’s drumline. I joined the Army back straight out of high school. 9/11 happened a year later and I was able to avoid Iraq after being deployed to South Korea, which was a secondary hot spot for conflict at that time. I was honorably discharged and ended up on tour one month after getting out. Since then, I have composed and conducted for a 70 piece orchestra composed for several indie films and television syndications, recorded on a few major artist’s records, ie. Queen Latifah and Melissa Etheridge, toured and performed MDed a multitude of artists across several genres. Todrick Hall, Andrae Crouch, Chanté Moore, Keiko Matsui, are just a few to show the diversity. I have lately been responsible for putting a great deal of new young musicians opportunities to get their music careers started.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The obstacles were having to overcome my identity, having my support system back me during the economic drought, juggling my family life and career advancement.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a production company. I record for artists, compose for film and television, I am an MD (music director), and I put bands together for clubs, artists, labels and special events,
I am most proud of being the one that gets called to upgrade or maintain a high level of execution.
What sets me apart from others is that my resources are extremely vast. I have been able to make relationships that go out of their way to support me because I give more that the average person, whether the budget could support my full commitment or not. My motto is “my name is more important than any job I do.” Money comes and goes, and time is only important if you have something worth putting your efforts towards it.
What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Inglewood. I played sports, Basketball, baseball, football, track, and waterpolo. Yes, Waterpolo… I got into cars for a while, but drums were the main thing I put all of my extra time into.
