Meet Phillip Kim

Today we’d like to introduce you to Phillip Kim. They and their team shared their story with us below:

Phillip Kim

He grew up encountering various cultures from an early age, and he always liked to observe with questions about all social structures and forms. He has longed for the humanities and dreamed of a romantic life. After enlightening by the idea of Keith Haring, He became interested in the importance of communication and the scalability of communication. Evoking the essence of communication, he decided to study graphics. He majored in graphic design at the Art Center and expanded his methodology and graphic practices by working with various people between LA, Seoul, and New York. Currently, we collaborate with various companies based on LA and Seoul to always explore interesting and innovative projects.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
From a macroscopic perspective, I have taken a smooth path. Every moment is painful from a microscopic point of view. These are concerns that always follow my design realization, such as the confrontation between ideals and reality, confusion in society, and concerns about personality. From one point on, I’ve learned to accept all these moments silently. I’m starting to take everything in this world that doesn’t kill me as inspiration.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I do provide rational solutions and systems with a clear message and daunting visual language. Experimental typography, unorthodox layout & grid system define my graphic practice. And lots of Nike projects intimated me as a designer to the public. Especially the Nike Korea Branding project. With my humble heart, I am proud of introducing new language and rules of the experimental visual, such as revealing variable types, semi-breaking the grid system, adding small cultural gestures on the type details, etc.

What matters most to you? Why?
I do matter most about the functionality that works in present society. The functionality should represent the culture and be facilitated as a tool for the purpose of communication. I do really care about the “present”. With the knowledge of traditional graphic design, I rebuilt the methodology for the present. I wish my visual solution is innovative, live, and helpful, not just for gaining visual attraction.
