Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Lai.
Hi Peter, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Peter Lai, fashion and costume designer. I got started with fashion and costume design when I was a teenager helping my family’s Chinese costume business for television. I went to fashion school and studied in the 80s where I got my AAS degree. I now have a tour open to the public where I display my collection of Chinese and Japanese costumes and antiques alongside my own designs.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was hard not having much money and no famous background. I came to this country by myself with no support. I am not American, and that made it difficult.

I specialize in fashion and costume design. I am most proud of the fact I was able to make my dream come true. I wanted to be a designer with my own name and boutique. I made it to this country by myself, studied, and made my dreams come true as a fashion designer. What I’m known for and What sets me apart from others is how different and unusual my looks are.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
Working hard and never giving up, keep on trying again and again, and working double or triple the amount of others around you.
