Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Ivancovich.
Peter, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
As a Landscape Designer for 20 years, I am very attuned to the natural world. But as plantings have become more severe and minimal in recent years, I wanted to explore the world of colorful, lush flowers in a very exuberant way. Combining my love for color, flowers and my background in fashion and fashion photography, I came to the idea of updating Dutch Old Master Flower paintings in an unexpected and contemporary way. A feeling of Cabinet of Curiosities is also achieved as I have included vases and objects from around the world that I have collected over the years. To top it off, real ethically sourced taxidermy birds and real bugs and butterflies complete the world I am trying to create.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I felt very compelled to make these series of approximately 20 photographs. My mother passed away this March just as I was beginning to shoot them and I felt a real catharsis and creative rush as I made them over the next few months. It shows something beautiful can be triggered by a sad occasion. In fact, I named a few of the images after my mom including “She knows What’s What” which was her high school yearbook motto. I thought it sounded so fresh and current that it was meant to be. Her hometown of “Mascoutah” also made the cut- which was also a beautiful sounding word.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
My point of view as an artist and photographer is I believe unique in the crowded art market. I am offering Floral still lives but with a twist and a frisson of glamour and quirk that I hope makes them special. I love the color and feel that my understanding and use of color also sets me apart. The natural world is my canvas, and that world is endlessly interesting and gorgeous.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have a terrible memory, so I might have to skip this question other than to say I grew up in a small town with a big personal appreciation of nature. My Father was a Farmer which might explain my love of plants.
