Meet Peter Fenn of Peter Fenn in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Fenn.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Peter . So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started playing music when I was 18. I had just broken up with my high school girlfriend (first love) and picked up a guitar that summer and learned how to play chords. Since I didn’t have anything to do, I remember playing for like 8 hours a day when I was just starting out. I eventually started writing songs that summer too and haven’t stopped since. I’ve been playing for 8 years and am doing music fulltime here in LA.

Has it been a smooth road?
It definitely isn’t a smooth road. I’ve been through so many phases of my “career” and always feel like I need to be growing and doing more. I think I’m finally in a place where I know who I am as an artist and feel a little more confident in my ability, but I still stress out that I need to be growing and getting better.

I think a lot of the struggle comes from people saying no to you. You have to understand that most people are going to say no to you and not let that affect your mindset. It’s way easier said than done, though.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a producer/songwriter/artist and wear a lot of different hats. I release music through my artist projects (Peter Fenn and small talk) where I sing/write/produce. But, I also have started to write and produce for other artists and I am finding a lot of joy in that.

To help pay the bills I also score for TV commercials with the company I started www.sunny-productions.com. I’ve been lucky enough to score commercials for Dr. Seuss, Thumbtack, Red Cross, Baptist Health Care, and Dropbox.

I’m really glad that I’ve diversified what I do in music because when something is slow, I can jump to the other projects I have.

I think what sets me apart is that I’m not trying to chase trends, I am authentic in what I write/produce and I’m super proud of that.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
LA is a good place to be for music, but it is also very competitive. I think it’s a great place to meet people and try to find your core collaborators/people who believe in you.

At the end of the day, though you can do music from anywhere and as long as you’re making great music that’s real and people connect with, you don’t have to be in LA. You can make awesome music from a bedroom in Wisconsin or something haha
