Meet Pennye King of Memory Lane Photo Booths in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pennye King.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Pennye. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was raised in the Midwest by a wonderful woman who worked hard and was the matriarch of our household. She taught the lesson of God first in your life and hard work second. In a time before computers, cell phones and even the Ballpoint pens, my childhood dream was not to be famous but to excel in the business world.

After relocating to Los Angeles in the early 60’s, I began to realize my creative talents and went on to study at Chionaurd Art School. I had little confidence in my gift, but was recognized for my fashion designs by the designer Edith Head, an icon in the fashion industry. But in those days, the fashion industry had no interest in Black designers.

I begin landing menial jobs as most young, not just Black, women in small offices, dabbling in the emerging computer world and anywhere to get work. I learned a smile went a long way. Eventually, I landed a job in the Telecommunications field. While the job was at the very bottom of the field, I learned a lot. I read a lot, talked to a lot of professionals in the field and began the journey on my life long career.

I soon realized, my college experience, menial office jobs, customer service training’s had a positive impact on my career. My career has spanned over 27 years of service with Los Angeles County.

Along the way, I raised a family, filled with joy and wonderful memories. My two fabulous daughters, Tempo and Ayla were born early in my career, and they have been my strength and inspiration to reach for new heights. Their respect and admiration is utmost in my life. My grandkids, Khalil, Naya, Neco, Layla and Leslie keep me amazed at the new technologies and how “apps” are a normal part of their everyday lives. The statement “just play with it…” has taken on a new meaning.

In 2015, I was introduced to the world of Photo Booths. The industry has been around a long time, catering to the rich and famous. I began to research owning a Photo Booth as a possible retirement solution. The idea of renting Photo Booths to everyday people at less expensive prices was my goal. So, along with my two daughters, Tempo and Ayla, we bought our first Authentic Arcade Style Enclosed Photo Booth. And Memory Lane Photo Booths was born.

At Memory Lane Photo Booths, we now offer several types of Photo Booths, reasonably prices for Weddings, Birthdays, Baby Showers, Quinceneras, BarMitzas, We customize each picture for our clients with special writing, logos, designs and colors to complement their occasion. Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Life has not been a smooth road, and I have had many challenges along the way. I have learned that one must grow from these struggles and know that with faith in God, all things are possible.

There were many times when I faced uncertainty, fear and doubt in my own decision. It was not until later in life did I understand these things were the situations that made me strong. These obstacles made me trust in God and understand that life is a road with no guarantees. We must have the faith that all thing are possible and we have a destiny before us. And it is in God that we must trust.

The Memory Lane Photo Booths is a business about making memories. We bring out the fun in people as they engage in expressing themselves in props and silly poses. They put on hat, boas, masks, and make funny faces in front of a camera, expressing fun, laughter and joy. They can be who they want to be. We capture those moments in time.

I am most proud of our team of attendants. They strive to make every event epic. They work to be sure the host is satisfied with our service and the guest will remember that night of celebration forever.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I believe my life was preordained and God chose my path. I look back and see the building blocks to where I am today. Although it has not been as rewarding as I would have liked, it has been God’s choice.

If it were my choice, I would have been a lawyer and made tons of money!
