Today we’d like to introduce you to Paul Melancon.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
Music has always been a big part of my family. My grandfather was a folk singer/songwriter, my dad was a rock DJ and a drummer, and all of my brothers played music as well. I grew up in rural Louisiana and Alabama before moving to LA right after college. There was regular music happening at all times in some capacity. I stuck with playing the trombone at first and slowly learned other instruments as I went – experimenting with lots of genres and groups from classical wind ensembles, jazz groups to metal bands. In college, I got the music production bug and started to focus on becoming a film composer. I moved to LA right after graduating with an internship with a film and tv composer about six years ago, and I never looked back.
Please tell us about your art.
My most recent font of inspiration has been in the form of music in the electronic pop genre for my project, Bedspread. A little over a year ago I decided to take a small hiatus from composing for a film to work on improving my life and mental health and developing an artist project. The sound I am going for is a blend of all my tastes – you will hear hints of funk, dark pop, and even retro video game sounds in the sonic palette. Think if Daft Punk mashed up with the original PlayStation! I am producing and playing most everything on the record. I’m even trying to sing some, which is something I never thought I would be bold enough to do. I want to share my experiences struggling with depression and body positivity in a positive, nostalgia-driven package. It took me almost 30 years to get comfortable in my own skin, but I’ve never been happier!
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
I think the biggest thing I’m taking away from this project is that you just have to keep moving. If I’m capable of creating my greatest piece of art in the darkest time of my life, I feel that I can do anything. You just have to continue to be bold and brave and trust your instincts without getting caught in your own head too much. Live with the struggle for a while and embrace it and you will come out the other side a stronger person.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
I’m planning on launching the album on all platforms around February. You can follow me at @bedspread_music on instagram and @bedspreadmusic on all other socials. You can hear some of my film music on MelanconMusic.com as well.
