Meet Patricia Steele of Steeleboxer Boxing/Kickboxing in Marina del Rey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Steele.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Patricia Steele. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Let me tell you a little bit about myself in the fitness department. I was overweight ever since I was a little girl. I never really worked out and thinking I was “just big-boned” I just excepted it. I also thought working out was just too much trouble and effort. Actually, whenever I did try to work out I never made enough real progress on my own to want to continue. I just did not have the discipline. One day after trying to squeeze into one pair of pants too many and trying to figure out what to wear to hide my body to go to the pool, I took a cold hard look at myself in the mirror and you know what?… I really didn’t like what I saw. So, I made a New Year’s resolution to get rid of this excess baggage. I joined a local fitness gym and took aerobics three times a week. It really got me going. I was driven and committed. I actually began to enjoy working out and looked forward to it. I did lose some weight but by no means did it get me into the physical shape that I truly yearned to be in.

Then I met Chris Steele, owner trainer of Steeleboxer Boxing/Kickboxing fitness gym. Chris saw the real me through my weight issues. We fell instantly in love were married a few years later and started a new business together. Chris had been in the boxing/kickboxing business for years but we started anew together. Once I got into a full boxing/kickboxing and weight training program I went from an office woman in my late thirties at a size 16 to a size 2. I feel great…young and healthy! This takes us to the present where we are both training, we enjoy and truly love our work and have a very successful fitness gym that has been featured in numerous TV shows and magazines. A highlight was being Voted BEST OF L.A. in Los Angeles Magazine’s Best of L.A. issue.

This training really put me into the kind of shape I always want to be in. With all the private training of kicking, punching and weight training I could help but get the best aerobic workout routine of my life and lean out my arms and legs in the process. I was always learning new techniques and it was never boring.

Has it been a smooth road?
My road in general has been challenging. I was overweight and in the business world most of my life…otherwise known as “office” world. As we know this world is tedious, hectic, intense and not much fun depending on the nature of the work you are doing. I worked for the Miss USA and Miss Universe Pageant for many years and was around the most beautiful women in the world which was challenging for me being overweight. It did prompt me to really want to get in shape. That was in New York where I grew up. Then I moved to San Francisco for a few years and then finally to Los Angeles where I knew I wanted to be. I took job in commercial property management for many years and found myself behind a desk working on a lot of paperwork, budgets, bills and putting out building fires that happen every day. I had several properties and did move around a bit but as we all know a desk job is the best way to put on weight. In my case butt and thighs. I always had lower body issues but this really did me in.

As the years past I made a New Year’s resolution when I couldn’t stand carrying the weight any longer and finally started a fitness program doing aerobics three times a week. I really enjoyed it and finally committed to it as I realized I was getting older and I wanted to be one of those women who were thin and fit as the years progressed. The truth of the matter is it took making a “decision” to finally do it and in my case I truly got lucky and married a boxing/kickboxing trainer. Once I truly decided and committed to losing weight only then did I start to look thinner and thinner as the weeks and months past. I did lose weight but doing aerobics without weights only took me so far. Once I stopped the aerobics class and jumped right into boxing/kickboxing and weight training did I start to really see results.

Boxing/kickboxing is the most aerobic workout you can have and mixed in with weights really gave me a well-balanced look like a swimmer or dancer which is the look I have today. Honestly, I thought in my lifetime this was not possible. I am forever indebted to my husband and this workout which gave me the body I wish I had when I was younger. I am still a work in progress but I know this is an amazing workout and I will continue to keep training for as long as I am able.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with STEELEBOXER Boxing/Kickboxing – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
My husband and myself have a very successful one-on-one boxing/kickboxing fitness gym in the Venice/Marina area for over 20 years and offer a progressive learning program in boxing and kickboxing. We also offer weight training as well for a well-balanced workout. We have a boxing ring, speed ball, double-end ball, heavy bags, dummies and bags to kick and punch.

We train different age groups from 10 years old to 70. We have beginner, intermediate and very advanced boxing/kickboxing and weight training classes as well. All levels of experience are welcome from not knowing anything about boxing to an established pro.

At our gym, we are known for our private training where clients can get in shape while really learning how to box and kickbox. There is no standing on the sidelines counting and watching while clients train. We doing everything with you. We are your training partner. That is how you learn to do all the moves correctly and that is also how we have distinguished ourselves from the rest of the boxing gyms as the quality of our training is so superior and top notch. For example, we have so many clients come in and after taking one of our lessons will say, “I have been training for many years and I learned more in one lesson here than I have in 5 years at my gym. The quality of our training is the best as all of our clients will attest to. We have a lot of diversity in our training whereas the other gyms do not. They continuously do a few basic moves again and again. We have an array of boxing moves and combinations as well as a full gym which we use as a break. Each lesson is different, complex and challenging while being progressive. Also at other gyms no one ever learns to really move around they don’t learn footwork. It is mostly learning to stay put and take punches. We don’t believe in that type of training. Punching and moving out of the way is the only way to do it properly. Additionally, we take great care in using protective gear, helmets, chest protectors, etc. We offer a very safe environment.

We also rent out our gym for location shoots – T.V., movie, modelling, as well as Birthday parties, Bachelor/Bachelorette parties, etc.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I am from New York and always wanted to come to Los Angeles. The fact that I am here now married to a phenomenal trainer who whipped me into shape and have a very successful business in Marina del Rey where I live as well is like a dream come true for me. Now that I have finally gotten into shape which I never thought possible but marrying a trainer was a miracle for me. Working out is my life now and I am
able to train others and help them reach their fitness goals.

I live by the beach and love living by the ocean. There is a lot of open space and airiness here. After living in the congestion of New York I really enjoy beach town living. I don’t like the congestion of L.A. city life so I prefer to stay on my side of town in the Marina. The homeless situation in the city especially on my side of town is out of control and I hope one day it can be rectified. I go and get coffee in the morning sometimes very early and get accosted more often than not by a the homeless. It is upsetting and scary at the same time. I also get very upset when I see the homeless with dogs. I am a dog person and have two little ones and I always try to give them food or water for their dogs. It breaks my heart to see that always.

I met Patricia Steele of Steeleboxer over fifteen years ago in a local coffee shop in Marina Del Rey.
I noticed how well sculptured her body was when we met. Because I was just over 50 years of age, I decided I wanted to have the “look” that Patricia had. I had more of a pear-shaped body than a sculptured one.

Through the diet awareness that Patricia offered me, and from the physical training of boxing/kick-boxing, I feel magnificent and I am now wearing size 5 clothes.

Patricia was not only the inspiration that I needed, but she guided me through the correct format and regime of exercising. Through her guidance, emotional support, encouragement, etc. I am now a more confident person and someone who is proud of my appearance.

I train with Patricia five days a week. I never find the hour boring. Time passes quickly since the program is fun while still providing a complete work out.

Over the past 15 years, I have had some orthopedic issues, including one surgery. Patricia developed an exercise program tailored to my own individual needs related to these injuries.

I highly recommend the services of Steeleboxer and Patricia, especially to anyone who needs to lose weight quickly. You will see fantastic results through a unique experience that keeps you coming back.
