Meet Patricia Childress of Mr. Ting Productions in Miracle Mile

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Childress.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I formed Mr. Ting Productions in 2011 after 15 years of producing, writing and directing television because I saw the potential in new media, the prospect of telling stories where there were fewer rules and stodgy regulations. Music videos and commercials have always been my obsessions and telling stories is my true passion. I’ve always been a creator, taking risks and trying new things. My first film, Women in Society, I made when I was 10 years old, and it ruffled some feathers, but I believed in telling tough tales.

Starting a production company with no real leads or a set business plan was terrifying and incredibly stupid, but I persisted, built my business from the ground up, and I created and developed projects that I am incredibly proud of, most notably Fa-fa-fa-fashion which was a digital series I created with Tyra Banks.

My secret sauce is telling a good story, whether it’s 3 seconds or 3 hours. It’s all about the hook, the plot and the resolution, no matter the medium. I believe what rises to the top is having a vision, an authentic point of view, and most importantly, having something to say that cuts through the clutter. And, being resilient AF.

Today, I have a few projects about to launch, and I am so excited about the future that’s full speed ahead.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road hasn’t been smooth, and sometimes I was so far off course there wasn’t even a path. I made mistakes, like fiscal irresponsibility, business immaturity, and not fostering my growth as a company. But truthfully, the worst mistake I ever made was doubting myself. Almost two years ago, I fell into a slump because I started to compare myself to other people, and because of that, I lost my mojo and a lot of precious time. If I could ever share one thing, it would be the old salesman adage: to compare is to despair.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in short-form branded entertainment, new media projects, social experiments, and traditional television formats. I live for my work, and if I can “see” it, I can make it happen. What sets me apart from others is my vast knowledge and experience of all phases of production, from pre to post. I’m also OCD about bringing quirky or wacky ideas to life.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles is the greatest city in the world, but like anywhere else on the planet, it’s exactly what you make it. And, a little magical thinking doesn’t hurt either.
