Meet Pasadena Photographer: Irene Nagayo

Today we’d like to introduce you to Irene Nagayo.

Irene, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I’ve been a professional photographer for many years now and still feel incredibly lucky to make my living doing what I most love. I was born and raised in Manila, Philippines but have lived in Sydney, Australia for 15 years where I started my photography. I moved to CA in 2013 and continued my passion for capturing distinctive, candid expressions and moments in time.

Has it been a smooth road?
No, but whatever rough road I have encountered, I always take it as a challenge.

Getting the trust of your clients is not that easy especially with so many good photographers around. Another struggle is dealing with photographers who don’t make it as a living but just as a hobby and just giving all photos for free. One of the struggles that i consider is the recent release of smartphones, everyone thinks phone camera is already enough without paying attention to the quality of the images and photos taken by the professionals. That they can always look back into that will give them smile in their faces.

What were you like growing up?
While I was growing up I was a very ambitious person. I was very independent and always positive that you can achieve what you want, just don’t give up! I also love going out with different kinds of people because, for me, that’s how you will learn dealing with challenges in life. As for my interest, I enjoy most outdoor activities like tennis, snorkeling, hiking and of course photography. My friends always say I have a very bubbly personality and I have lots of energy!

Is there a specific memory from when you were younger that you really miss?
My favorite memory from my childhood is the Christmas season where we always go to my dad’s province and spend the holidays with our relatives.

So, what should we be on the lookout for, what’s next in store for you?
Plans for the future? As of now, I just go by the day, but what I can picture in my mind is I’m gonna be a successful businesswoman, I just can’t decide yet on what exactly I am going to focus on.
