Meet Pamela Joy, M.A. of Down To There® in San Francisco Bay Area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pamela Joy, M.A.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
If you asked me 25 years ago when I was studying to be a biomechanical engineer, I definitely would not have thought I’d be a sex and relationship coach.

My shift from tech into this field started as a personal growth journey. I initially started blogging as a form of cathartic journaling and public service announcement. When I first started writing, I was in a long-term marriage and seeing a sex and relationship coach. I was shocked how much sex education I had missed out on and wanted to share what I was learning so others struggling with sex could join me on a journey of self-discovery.

What started as a hobby quickly turned into a passion though, and after I received my Masters in Counseling Psychology, in addition to writing about sex and relationships, I decided to open a private coaching practice to work with couples and individuals to explore how to get more pleasure, more intimacy and more connection in their relationships.

Has it been a smooth road?
About a year and a half ago, I started the process of divorcing my ex. We had been together for 25 years and much of my initial inspiration to enter this field had been based on our journey together. It’s been interesting to re-launch my website and my offerings in this new stage of my life as a single woman who has reached midlife and decided that she wanted something different than the life she had previously built. While it was initially difficult to juggle seeing couples who were struggling in relationship while I was struggling in my own, it also kept me humble and empathetic to their struggles and I think ultimately has paved the way for me connecting more with my clients.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Down To There® – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a sex and relationship coach who works with clients to increase their capacity for emotional and physical pleasure. The most common types of challenges that clients bring to me are desire discrepancy where one person wants more sex than another or challenges with getting aroused that might show up as erectile dysfunction or difficulty in achieving orgasm. I also work with clients who are interested in pursuing non-traditional relationship structures like open relationships or polyamory.

I work differently than many therapists in that I work collaboratively and experientially, which means that instead of just talking about what’s going on, we try doing something new with the help of what I call “experiments” in session. Both the client and myself keep our clothes on… but flirting with each other is fair game!

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the energy of Los Angeles and come down often to record podcasts with other sex educators, coaches and therapists. Working with LA clients online can be a fun way to stay connected even when I’m not here physically!
