Today we’d like to introduce you to Oscar Lopez.
Hi Oscar, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I have lived in Culver City (West LA) my whole life and continue to become inspired by the city and those around me. As a first-generation American, I am proud to be apart of a community that is so diverse. I have learned many skill sets in this environment but I have chosen to take on a career in Filmmaking and Video Production. From a young age, I have felt very much apart of multiple social groups and loved documenting events as they happened.
I grew up riding fixed gear bikes in middle school and it’s been near a decade later and still haven’t stopped. The biking community allowed me to meet people from all over Los Angeles and create long friendships. One thing I regret from all this is not picking up a camera sooner. I’ve learned that being able to document these moments is priceless and hope to continue doing so. This skill set has also benefitted me by being able to help small businesses in my community. Creating online content for small businesses and other creatives right now is vital because of the current state of lockdown. Giving them a platform to showcase what they can create is something I enjoy doing.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Just like most professions, struggles are apart of the journey and are only a learning experience. Making a name for yourself in a more and more saturated profession is becoming more and more difficult. However, difficult does not mean impossible. I have been an athlete in many sports; soccer, jiu jitsu, powerlifting, skateboarding, biking and the best feeling to me from all of that has been overcoming adversity. There’s just no other feeling like it. I can’t wait to see the opportunities that come forth in my filmmaking career and look forward for the ride.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
At the moment, I am a Senior in college wrapping up my last semester to earn my Bachelor’s Degree in Multimedia Production. Following this, I am starting my own video production company that will cover media content focussed on commercial work, music videos, and online content. I currently shoot, edit, and direct all of the projects I have put out but, I am eager to collaborate with other talented creators!
The crisis has affected us all in different ways. How has it affected you and any important lessons or epiphanies you can share with us?
At this time of the Covid-19 Crisis, I have learned that we must protect ourselves and the ones around us as much as we can. However, I have also learned that the Earth has not stood still for even a minute and it is up to us to keep the ball rolling. Just like Arnold Schwarzenegger says, “You can’t climb the ladder of success with your hands in your pockets.” This past year has not been easy by any means but we cannot walk out of it empty handed. I have really taken my craft seriously and have learned as much as I could in this lockdown and will continue to do so in 2021 and on.
