Meet Oren Pius of Cosmic Vinyl in Echo Park

Today we’d like to introduce you to Oren Pius.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started collecting records at a young age and started buying collections and before I knew it, I amassed thousands of records. I decided to start selling in flea markets all of Los Angeles. I eventually got tired of hauling around tons of heavy records and waking up at 5am to set up, so then I began to pursue a storefront. My cousin and I opened Cosmic Vinyl in 2016 on Sunset Blvd. in Echo Park.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Finding consistently good inventory has always been a struggle. Often times we have to travel out of state to buy collections.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Cosmic Vinyl – what should we know?
I (Oren Pius) own the shop, buy all inventory, set up home audio systems, and organize all live performances. Our shop has mostly used vinyl. We also sell hi-fi audio gear, tapes, CDs, and have live performances from local bands and musicians and comedy. We donate portions of our proceeds to Animal Rights Groups and to help the surrounding homeless communities. We are in the middle of transitioning the store into a record store and all-vegan coffee shop.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Being consistent and being kind to others.
