Today we’d like to introduce you to Olivia Grace.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Olivia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I used to love journaling and writing short stories when I was really little. Around my 8th birthday, my parents got me a keyboard, and I started turning my stories into songs. Once I got a little older, I started playing small shows around my hometown at local coffee shops and record stores. At first, it was absolutely terrifying to perform in front of others, but it was also so liberating. I then went to college in Chicago to study music and shortly moved to New York afterward. I had done several writing trips to LA, where I was in sessions with different artists/writers, playing shows, and just getting to know the city. After the third trip, it felt like the right thing to move here, and so I did in August 2017.
Has it been a smooth road?
It’s definitely been a rollercoaster. Pursuing a career in music, to me, means having a lot of persistence and faith, along with a strong work ethic. One of my biggest obstacles has honestly been myself— learning to stop questioning myself and instead trusting the process. Music isn’t a very linear path. There’s a lot of not knowing what’s going to happen next, but it has been so important for me to just keep moving forward.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
As an artist, I feel accomplished right after writing a song or recording a new single. I love the feeling of completion, especially when during the writing/recording process, I’ll go through many different versions. I’m also the most proud when I can connect with others through my own music. It’s a pretty amazing feeling. I’ve had times where after a show someone will come up to me and tell me how they loved one of my songs and share how they could relate. It’s special to me.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles has been great for music. There is so much creativity and collaboration out here. Outside of the actual music industry, Los Angeles has just been healthy for myself mentally as a writer. I love all the nature out here; it really helps me to feel grounded, and when I was living in New York, I didn’t really have that. I just moved from Echo Park to Altadena a few months ago, so I’m closer to the mountains, and my place is really private, which is so refreshing for me. I have seen glimpses of the darker parts of the industry out here, but I think that’s also all avoidable as long as I stay mindful and true to myself. I’ve surrounded myself with some really good people and feel grateful for that.
