Today we’d like to introduce you to Olav Stubberud.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Olav. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
My base is photography, been shooting since I was 11, and working with it since I been 17. It was the action sports scene that got me into it, basically shooting my friends doing stuff. And it developed to that I was able to travel full time as a photographer with 300 travel days as 17.
After working with the biggest names in snowboarding that became my main category, I started to walk into a different landscape – Towards fashion and music. Video was still a new thing to me at this point, but after getting asked by my friend to film a music video, I ended up doing back to back videos for years. My big turn over was when I shot the first press photos for Kygo, something that led to three years of touring with him. And made me get in touch with some new amazing people that extended my years on the road. Was lucky enough to hit the road with Chainsmokers, Halsey, Justin Bieber, Carnage, G-eazy, Axwell & Ingrosso, PartyNextDoor for the five years before Covid hit. This last year it has been more towards art direction, and be able to combine everything that I have been around the last ten years. As well as continue my journey to make more exhibitions and create more stuff for myself.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I feel like you can’t reach a high point without the low. I have luckily been from a good ground, safe ground. And I thank my parents for that. But that have made me be able to jump on every opportunity that I have got since I knew I have something come back to. I have almost worked my self to the ground a couple of times, but I have always made sure that I am in the best possible shape to take on what gets thrown at me, or what I put myself into. I am proud of having the work ethic and self-discipline that I have taught myself. But when you don’t force it, but work hard and follow the organic flow, things will reach some kind of smooth road.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Since I outsource a lot of my project, I have kept my company based around what I do. Photo and production will always be in the center of it, but the past years it has been around various design processes, something that I love working with, even tho it is extremely time-consuming. I am probably most known for my docu photography, something that I am also very proud of. But I would say to have insight in so any different genres and processes is making my skillset unique.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
The big next big move will be my art. My own projects, the projects that I really can show my diversity and what I stand for. To compromise even less, and bring on new challenges for myself.
