Today we’d like to introduce you to Ohara Aivaz
Hi Ohara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am a native of Palos Verdes, CA. After graduating magna cum laude from the University of California, Irvine with Phi Beta Kappa honors distinction, I went on to complete my medical degree at Georgetown University Medical School. I then completed a prestigious combined Internal Medicine and Dermatology residency program at Georgetown University Hospital and Medstar Washington Hospital Center in Washington, DC. During my residency, I had the unique opportunity to receive training at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Dermatology Department, and thus supplemented my rigorous training by working with the NIH’s world experts in Dermatology. I was awarded the position of Chief Resident of Dermatology in my last year of residency. I am one of a handful of dermatologists who are double-board certified in both Dermatology and Internal Medicine. I was a dermatologist with Cedars-Sinai Medical Group for several years, then in private practice for two years on the westside, and I am happy to be back in Beverly Hills!
I practice both cosmetic and medical dermatology, and I see children and adults. My training at Georgetown emphasized the philosophy of ‘cura personalis’, care of the whole person. As such, I get to know each of my patients to understand his or her needs, desired outcomes, and personal philosophies on aesthetic and medical treatments so that we may determine together what he or she will benefit from the most.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey through my medical training was smooth as I transitioned from undergraduate, to medical school, to residency directly, without taking any time off. Those years, however, were difficult in that I sacrificed time with family and friends as I studied for years to complete my training.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Dr. Aivaz’s calm and caring demeanor, as well as her expertise in medical dermatology and facial rejuvenation, have earned her several “Top Doctors” awards since she has been in practice. Her personal philosophy in facial rejuvenation is to naturally rewind the hands of time to make patients appear as a better, more refreshed version of themselves. She strives to help each patient achieve his or her aesthetic goals through a multi-dimensional approach that addresses numerous factors related to aging. Her training at Georgetown emphasized the philosophy of ‘cura personalis’, care of the whole person. As such, she gets to know each of her patients to understand his or her needs, desired outcomes, and personal philosophies on aesthetic treatments so that she can determine which procedures they will benefit from the most. She sees both children and adults, and does both complex medical dermatology (rashes, skin cancer detection and treatment, mystery rashes, acne, psoriasis, etc.) and cosmetic dermatology (botox, fillers, lasers, chemical peels, PRFM, hair loss, and more).
Dr. Aivaz is a fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology, a diplomate of the American Board of Internal Medicine, a member of the Phi Beta Kappa honors society, and belongs to various professional societies including the Medical Dermatology Society and the Los Angeles Metropolitan Dermatologic Society.
Dr. Aivaz has lectured nationally, including invitations to speak at the National Institutes of Health, and internationally. She has also authored several articles in peer-reviewed journals such as JAMA Dermatology.
In her spare time, Dr. Aivaz loves to bake, play tennis, weight lift, run and do pilates, and spend time with her family.
What sort of changes are you expecting over the next 5-10 years?
I see AI playing a larger role in dermatology in the next 5-10 years. There is already technology that has been developed which can detect skin cancer non-invasively.
