Today we’d like to introduce you to Nya Federoff.
Nya, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I was 9 years old when I started getting into filming and editing. I’d pick up my mom’s early 2000s camcorders and make skits and soon taught myself how to edit clips together. In middle school I got the amazing chance to get a head start learning about Film and TV production at my local high school. Shoutout my teacher Mr. Butler, he’s taught me so much and really inspired me to turn my passion into a career.
Fast forward to my senior year of high school, as the executive producer of our school’s TV show, I was working my butt off to get into my dream school, USC’s School of Cinematic Arts. Somehow, I miraculously was accepted and studied Cinema and Media Studies with a minor in Music Industry. Throughout college and after graduation I have done freelance photography, videography, and editing projects with an emphasis in music. I also work with company Gritty In Pink as their head of content; fighting for gender equality and equal pay starting with the music industry! I’m deeply honored and grateful for the opportunities that have come my way. Working with artists like Saweetie and companies like Live Nation have been so incredible, and something a girl from a small town in New Jersey had only dreamed of.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As I continue to figure out how to reach my goals, I can tell you it has definitely not been a smooth road. When I got to college, the imposter syndrome took over my life. Being surrounded by such talent. intelligence, power, and even beauty at my school made me question if I was really good enough to do what I was doing, if I was going to even ‘make it’ or achieve my dreams. Honestly, those thoughts haven’t gone away. But I (have to) remind myself that I got into that school like everyone else, I’ve gotten the opportunities I’ve had because I AM good enough. Fighting for myself has been difficult. Being in the entertainment industry, as well as being a woman, I’ve had challenges getting the value and respect I should for my work. Feeling undervalued—both financially and professionally—has made it tough to stay motivated sometimes; but when it comes down to it and I really think about it, I always end up at the same conclusion: What would I be doing if not making art?? That’s what it’s really about and what it’s always been about; finding different mediums to express myself and make something beautiful for the world.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a content creator, specializing in editing, as well shooting video and photo. My expertise is in helping you create your vision exactly how you would see it in your brain; a term my mom and I coined “visual listening”. I don’t just hear ideas—I see them. Visual listening is my ability to interpret a client’s or collaborator’s vision through conversation, tone, and emotion, then translate that into a visual medium that captures their intent perfectly, bringing their ideas to life on screen. There’s nothing more satisfying.
Having had experience since I was single digits years old, my skills have become advanced enough to be super speedy when it comes to editing and I’m able to have quicker turnaround times that other editors or creators you might find. I think one of my proudest moments was creating 10 sizzle reels for instagram in about the span of a week. There was a 3 day conference down in San Diego I was hired to shoot, and I was able to get out a recap reel each night after filming all of the events. I just immediately sat back down in the hotel room and started putting all my footage together. The company was amazed to have a post ready each day of the conference, followed by 7 more reels for later posting. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever felt more efficient in my life haha.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
Maybe it’s because she had just passed away recently, but the memory that’s been on my mind often and would probably be the answer to this question would be picking out my childhood pup. I was 12, my parents and I were at a breeder’s house looking at the litter. I was told to pick a ‘fun’ one, so I scanned the lot. It was the middle of July in New Jersey, which means its the most hot and humid part of the summer. Most of the puppies were laying sleepily like blobs in their little pen outside… too hot and tired to move. Except one dog all alone at the corner edge of pen… digging energetically to get out. “That’s the one!” I knew in that moment that she was the fun one I was looking for, and we had the most fun for 13 years together.
