Today we’d like to introduce you to Nstasia.
Nstasia, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Well, back in 1990 there was a little girl by the name of.. lol jk. I was born in Miami from a Haitian mother and American Father. Born in Miami but raised by my father in NC. He’s the reason why music became the center of my world. He’s an amazing musician and used to carry me around with him to shows studios… I’ve been around music all my life.
Growing up in the small town of Asheville, NC I knew I had to go somewhere that would allow me to follow my musical dreams. Asheville is beautiful but very small and not the best place for an aspiring artist in my opinion back then. So, after high school since I knew I had to enroll in college lol, I chose a school in Atlanta, Clark Atlanta University. I had never been to Atlanta I just knew that a lot of my favorite artists were there and were growing in music there so I had to go!
Atlanta is where I spent the majority of my adult years, its where I really started forming into who I am creatively. I went there with a purpose of music so in my first year of college, music was first and studies second lol! It definitely showed because I didn’t do as well as I could grade wise but I did get signed to a publishing deal with EMI which is now SONY ATV.
I’ve always been an artist at heart but songwriting for others seemed to be the best way for me to eventually focus on my own music. In the constant rhythm of going wherever I needed to pursue my dreams, I decided to move to LA with the shift of music and artists. The move elevated my writing definitely. LA gave me the experience of writing with some of the best in the world which I’d never done until then.
Through the years of writing, I finally had the opportunity of sharing my own heart and lyrics with my voice paired with my performance. And funny enough I’ve had more success as an artist than a songwriter for other artists. Years of songwriting and demoing records for different artists definitely helped build the foundation of confidence and skill that I’ve been able to show through my own music.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Lol, smooth? Hm. I’m an emotional woman with a lot of passion and spirituality. That’s what kept me pushing. There were a lot emotional moments, not knowing if your dreams will come true. Working so hard for years but not seeing the payoff, being looked over as an artist because I’m a darker skinned woman (Which I would NEVER change, I am truly in love with every inch of me and wouldn’t be as confident as I am without it). You just really have to be sure about your desires and what you feel like is your destiny. Know what you deserve. That’s in all aspects of life.
Believing in yourself is honestly far from what people should think is cliche. That is what’s going to keep you going when nothing in your physical view looks anywhere close to where you want to be. Its faith that won’t let you give up. An extremely talented friend of mine, Marley Waters once said “Those who never give up never not make it.” That made so much sense to me, I said it back to myself whenever I got lost and discouraged. If I quit, I’ll never know if I could’ve achieved my desires, but if I never quit then the energy has no choice but to give me what I want.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I’m extremely excited about my new album and new collaborations! My first album “New Religion” did really well and inspired me to continue putting out music from the heart. Do what I feel and the people who resonate with me will love it.
