Today we’d like to introduce you to Nour Milla.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nour. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a journalist, TV host, producer, writer and narrator with a passion for community contribution and a fervor for adventure. I was born in Boston to a Syrian father and Colombian mother but raised in Colombia since I was two. As soon as I graduated from college in 2007 with a double major in journalism and PR, my career in television began when I was offered the chance to host Caracol y Bancolombia Mas Cerca, a widely successful traveling show at Caracol Networks in Colombia.
However, for as far as I can remember, I always had an inkling to live in Los Angeles, which is why in 2013 I packed my bags and came to United States, where I briefly studied acting at Stella Adler Acting Academy. And it wasn’t until 2016 that I began working on a slew of television projects, which included LATV’s second season of the food show Infusion, and Tiempo Extra, a weekly live sports show for Azteca Channel.
Being fully bilingual has allowed me to explore two different markets, exposing my work to a broader audience. I currently host LATV’s sports show Fannation and have my own radio show called “Fiesta Deportiva”, which is streamed in Las Vegas 87.7. I also serve as a west coast correspondent for Telemundo, where I get to interview athletes that are currently playing in the major leagues.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
There have been a lot of struggles along the way. I remember having a really hard time adjusting to a different country after leaving everything behind in Colombia. I had suddenly left my family, friends and boyfriend, and had some issues adapting to the fast pace of Los Angeles. I was also working three jobs simultaneously as a server, barista and bartender, which would in turn leave me physically and emotionally drained. Furthermore, 2016 was the year everything turned even more sour because I was diagnosed with depression and obsessive compulsive disorder, stemming from the uncertainty of success in this business.
I have always been an over thinker, and the fact that after three years of living in Los Angeles I was still not able to adapt to the lifestyle sent me on a downward spiral of anxiety and sadness. Additionally, I fell victim to binge eating as a way to cope with my situation, and that’s when I knew I needed help. So I went back home for a few months to get treatment and spend time with my family.
Fortunately, as soon as I came back, I had a lot of jobs offers lined up for me to work as a tv host in the Latin market, and this is when I finally started feeling comfortable in California on my own, but I will say that moving to a different city to start your life from scratch without any guarantees can seriously take a toll on your mental health.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
I am just proud to be able to use my triple citizenship and bilingual faculties to work as a journalist in this industry, especially during times where diversity is such an integral part of Hollywood. I am beyond honored to be able to bridge the gap between cultures and represent the melting pot that characterizes Los Angeles. I am also someone who has an excellent grasp of both cultures, having lived in each context for a significant amount of time. I believe however that every person on this planet is born with their very unique and irreplaceable blueprint, making it their responsibility to honor their authenticity through whatever outlet they choose.
So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I am definitely looking forward to affiliating my name to a major American broadcasting network, where I am able to proudly represent my heritage. I am also in the process of creating my travel show with a major plot twist that I still can’t disclose. But stay tuned for it because it is nothing short of unpredictable and exciting!
