Today we’d like to introduce you to Kate Marley.
Kate, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Makeup has interested me since the day I plucked my eyebrows into matchsticks in seventh grade. I poked a lot of friends in the eyes with metallic blue pencils. I didn’t learn to use mascara until sometime in high school when I began acting. Red lipstick made my teeth look yellow and monolids made me feel less beautiful than girls with “typical” eyelids.
However…
Despite every beauty mistake I’ve made, I’ve continued my love of liquid eyeliner and a good contour and somehow managed to find my way into professional makeup artistry. I have experience in theatre, modeling, headshots, film, web series, etc., and have worked in New York City, Seattle, and Los Angeles.
I approach my work with passion, inspiration, and a sexy, angled brush. I’m a little funny, a little awkward, and I love creating art. I love sharing art. I love to inspire and be inspired. And I love a good eyebrow pencil.
The world is so beautiful already. I’m just here to add glitter.
Has it been a smooth road?
Being a part of the entertainment industry is never easy! Since I’m primarily an actor, I’m very happy I managed to find success in another passion. Jobs are few and far between and a lot of it depends on connections and who you know. I find the hardest obstacle for me has been committing to my own style and improving on my abilities that best express what I can do and how I’d like to represent myself. I do a lot of special effects makeup and it’s not interesting or liked by all, and sometimes it’s hard to get hired for, say, modeling gigs. But constantly improving my craft and solidifying my styles have helped me find and keep jobs.
What were you like growing up?
I was always shy around adults but loved making new friends. I was never considered a “popular” kid but I seemed to fit in just fine with all sorts of social groups. I played several sports in elementary and middle school, followed by theatre in high school, and always had lots of people around me. I can be incredibly outgoing, but I’ve always been an introvert. I liked to socialize, but more than anything, I loved spending time alone, singing karaoke in my bedroom and reading books out loud. I loved drawing, I loved playing piano, and I loved the outdoors.
What is your favorite childhood memory?
When I was in third grade, I celebrated a Spice Girls-themed birthday at a mini-golf course. I had a Spice Girls cake, I got Spice Girls dolls and photoshopped pictures of me with them, and best of all, my friends and I dressed up, took photos, and danced around to the music all day long. It was such a fun day, just goofing off and feeling that “Girl Power”. I still have those framed, photoshopped photos in my parents’ house somewhere.
What are your plans for the future?
I’m sure it’s some sort of cliche to say that I have many, many plans for the future. I moved from NYC to get involved in film and television, so I’m seeking an acting agent/manager, and continuing auditions. But I’m hoping to continue my career in makeup and I can’t wait to see where that takes me. I’m also a visual artist and am currently creating an adult coloring book to sell this year. I have high hopes in my future and my career path; just making sure I keep an open mind and never give up!
