Norma, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.

Stayed out of the Sun for my late 20 and 30’s due sun damage showing up on my face and arms form previous exposure. Became a Single Mother when my Daughter was five months when I started Sunless Beauty. I didn’t want to go back to corporate America, I wanted to work for myself. Bought my first spray tan kit with a credit card in April of 2012. Started Spray Tanning at home and offering mobile spray tanning service at night when my infant was sleeping and when I could find a family member to sit for me and working on my website in the middle of the night. My husband had fallen ill and could not work so I was working and on food stamps at the time to hold us over.
Word stared spreading – Yelp started growing on my review soon I had women coming to my house at all hours of the day and night requesting spray tans. In April 2014 I decided I needed a place. So I opened up inside the Sola Salon in Torrance. Since then I’ve Branded my Own Spray Tan Solutions, Partnered two more location in Tarzana and Beverly Hills, started my own school where I train and certify women from Las Vegas, Colorado, Texas, all over the US and now my products and I have trained tanners in the Philippines.
My team and I have spray tanned for the biggest runway shows in Los Angles: Style Fashion Week, LAFW, La Swim Week – droves of runway models. I was the first Spray tanning company in America to bring spray tanning as part of the beauty team to the runway outside of the Victoria Secret show. My products have sponsored such pageant organization such as Hawaiin Tropics, Miss Swimsuit USA, Miss Asia USA, Miss Global Latina, Mrs. Globe, Miss Russian LA, Miss Brazil LA
I have spray tanned and worked with celebs such as Kate Upton, Erika Alexander, Haylie Pomory, Josie Ochoa, Patrick Demsey and many models and IG influencers and makeup artists have used our self tanning gel such as Lili Galichi and Jennifer Conejo Beauty.
The thing that is great about my products are that they are Euro Union compliant, organic base, no parabens, or toxic chemicals, odor free (meaning you won’t smell while you’re developing, we have ton of skin nourishing ingredients like Aloe, oatmeal, chamomile, citric acid, cucumber, copper amino acids (anti-aging). The tans won’t streak or fade patchy or uneven. The tans do not dry out the skin.
I developed my own 14 step spray tan technique that I teach during my certification classes that guarantee a flawless spray tan every time for the clientele – so no matter which location you go to and no matter what Sunless Beauty Certified artist tans you, you get the same tan guaranteed.
Our locations are one personnel owned and operated studios – Torrance – Beverly Hills – Tarzana. Torrance is privately owned by Norma Wesolowski, the volume is so high out of this location we have 2-3 tanners working at all times. The Torrance location has 151 five-star yelp reviews and is known for amazing Natural, Medium, and Dark tans.
I have also created exact menu formulations for speciality services for professionals who need to be tan such as Ballroom Dancing Tans, Physique Competition Muscle Tans, Contour Spray Tans (Pageant, Stage and Photo Shoots) – in which she has masterly developed a “Contour Technique” that she also teaches to students from around the globe.
Sunless Beauty has a fun culture and has an off the menu tan called “Vegas to Miami Bound” which is an “ultra dark concoction of the Sunless Beauty Tans solutions “shade” “eclipse” and “booster drops” as well as a special colorant ingredient mixed a special way and tanned on contoured layer by countered layer. This tan’s name was coined after she found this perfect blend for all her Miami and Vegas bound clients who wanted to “BE DARK” but not orange.
Since inception Sunless Beauty has grown 10,000% in revenue in nearly 4 years and we have plans to continue growing our Solutions Sales, education, pro studios and expand the product line. This year launching our newest product “Tanbuki” a flawless self-tanning applicator brush to apply the Self Tanning Gel “Celestial Body” coined after my love of the expansive universe.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not been smooth. The biggest part of growing of being a business owner is ingenuity and stamina and the ability to connect with the client.
You come across challenges everyday, whether it’s financing, growing pains, personnel challenges. The one thing I tell myself is that I want to leave something behind my for my Daughter, a legacy. I want to overcome challenges and be able to provide for her now and in the future.
Other challenges are balancing a budget, as I started this company from a shoestring and run pretty lean. Being on top of financing coming in and out. One system that was developed to help manage cash flow for my company was developing the pre-pay pre-booking system. Where customers can book in online 24 hours a day 7 days a week safely and securely on live calendar.
Another challenge is offering the best spray tans. In the beginning, I was using other companies products and I found that I wasn’t quite happy with the color, the smell, or the ingredients. There was just something off about them. So working with a 30-year formulator I finally have my perfect solution that I feel good about ethically and that my clients love.
Another challenge is creating a good customer service driven model. All our clients are offered a 100% tan satisfaction, are followed up with, are sent regular deals and promotions and rewards and keeping a happy and safe environment for the client and the staff.
Lastly – Staying innovative. I pride my company in the best spray tan technique on the market. We actually do full custom body wraps when we tan and 3-D face contour so our tans look the most natural. Also keeping up on trends and developing the best techniques for contour tanning, custom color mixes for the skin. And understanding the “tan plan” meaning what tan is good for which skin type, lifestyle of the client and occasion for the tan.
So much goes into spray tanning, it’s an art. That’s why I think our spray tan artist are the best in LA. Every one of our customers is getting a celebrity technique spray tan. Also, concierge beauty is a growing business. So we have recently added “Organic At Your Location Makeup Services” to our menu. Where we have partnered with an Organic Makeup company Voodoo Makeup and our makeup artist partners to not only apply flawless spray tans in the comfort of your our clients home but now Organic Makeup Services as well.

What were you like growing up?
I was a very creative kid. I loved painting and drawing. I was self-taught on how to paint acrylic on canvas landscapes and portraits by age 12. I was also an entrepreneur I used to make bracelets and little crafts and stand out in front of the house and sell my items. I was always a clown very funny and loved to make people laugh. I was shy and insecure but my parents had put me a few beauty pageants as a teenager to help me get out of that awkwardness. I actually placed a few times. I loved making my barbies up – hair and make-up and make-believe with them for hours. I had an active imagination and was always playing with my toys.
