Today we’d like to introduce you to Nora Vetter.
Hi Nora, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I moved to Los Angeles in February 2020 and we all know what soon followed. I found myself socially isolated in a new City and did a lot of walking (I moved from NYC so lacked a car) to at least get to know the City while getting to know the people was a bit on hold. I was constantly searching Google Maps for fun and interesting destinations. One day I saw “Friendship Auditorium” on the map. That led me to learn about a nearly 100 yr old social club, The Los Angeles Breakfast Club! The Club not only met there weekly but also built the building! Alas, since it was the pandemic, they weren’t meeting anymore. I lamented not knowing about it for the brief time I was in L.A. before it shut down. But then…I discovered they were meeting online! I attended my 1st online meeting in November 2020 and was immediately smitten with this Club of Hospitality. The welcoming and generous members aka “Ham an’ Eggs” plus the charming Club traditions were something I had to be a part of! I submitted for membership and was approved in January 2021. Then I was officially initiated at our return to in-person meetings in July 2021. I was told that the online meetings were nothing like those in-person and I soon found out what they meant! (In a good way!) I felt incredibly lucky to have discovered this gem of a Club and wanted to contribute to its success. By 2022, I was asked to join the Club Board in April and was humbled to be elected by the Membership to be the Club President in July.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The role of The Los Angeles Breakfast Club President is volunteer so the immediate challenge is time management. Our previous President did a wonderful job building up our Membership after near extinction eight years ago. But with growth comes growing pains to be addressed – primarily updating business practices with an eye on keeping the Club sustainable. Not just financially but also in making the most of volunteer people power while avoiding burnout. Outside of that, there is the standard interaction with members – checking in, receiving feedback, seeing what can be improved, what’s working, etc – contributing to putting on a meeting every Wednesday morning for members and guests and continuing a lease negotiation with the City’s Rec & Park to ideally find an amicable compromise regarding the amount being charged to us & use of space in the Club we built.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Outside of my Presidency, I work part-time at Tail o’ the Pup and am a Freelance Social Media Content Creator for four Convention Visitor Bureaus on the East Coast. Though my move to L.A. just prior to the pandemic threw off my goal to gain full-time employment at a production studio. (Hi AGBO!) I’m still hopefully searching for that full-time position. Being the President of The Los Angeles Breakfast Club has definitely confirmed that I’m a quick learner capable of taking on challenges and working with a varied group of people to find ways to solve them in a manner fitting of the Shrine of Friendship. Communication, compromise, and adaptability are key!
We love surprises, fun facts and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
During the pandemic, I began a podcast inspired by regional food. Each episode of “Local Farey Tales” is comprised of the voices that know a particular regional food best – the inventors, super fans, festival organizers, historians, etc. As you listen, you’ll feel like you’re sitting at a table with these folks as they tell you the “Local Farey Tale” of the featured regional fare. I really love researching, interviewing and editing together each episode. My Presidency has made it harder to carve out time to get episodes out regularly but more are in progress… I miss it too much to give it up completely!
