Today we’d like to introduce you to Nora Rothman.
Nora is an activist and musician. Splitting time between Los Angeles, New York, and Seattle, Nora creates “mesmerizing” art with woman from all around the world (TeenVOGUE). Since 2017, she’s been inventing new ways to use music for social good. Her folk soul sound recalls the vocals of Sarah Vaughan, poetry of Joni Mitchell, and musicality of Amy Winehouse.
“Born to be an entertainer,” Nora grew up in Hollywood with an actress mom and producer dad (Yahoo! Music). Struggling with anxiety disorder, she found relief in music—particularly jazz. After graduating from Brown with honors in Creative Writing, she moved back to L.A. and played music while appearing as an actress on stage and screen.
In 2016, Nora took a hiatus to work as a Field Organizer on the Clinton campaign. The day of Trump’s inauguration, she made a promise to continue her fight for women’s rights through music. After releasing her debut EP in July to praise from Paste and The Deli Magazine, she made a commitment to work with exclusively female-identifying artists.
Nora has been featured on The Future is Female Spotify playlist and performed with her all-female band for a sold out crowd at Rockwood Music Hall in New York. Her collaborative lyric video with Pakistani artist Areeba Siddique was featured on Yahoo! Music and Teen VOGUE. She sold out her direct-to-vinyl fundraiser for EMILY’s List this November, and just launched Earhart, a platform for female, trans, and gender nonconforming artists.
The Nora Rothman – Remix EP (which features 100% woman artists) will be released this spring in a pay-what-you-want campaign. Half of all proceeds will go to Planned Parenthood. Her full-length album is in the works for summer of 2018.
Please tell us about your art.
I make art to feel and be felt. My only hope is that the music I make will affect people. That it will inspire them, or scare them, or uplift them. Honesty is the guiding light of my work. I believe that no matter how different people are, we can all connect over essential human truths…so I just try to share mine.
As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
I define success as making music that is authentic to me, that I’m proud of, and then sharing it. If one single person across the world is affected by a song that I wrote, I feel I’ve succeeded.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can stream my music on all major streaming platforms. Currently, I’m releasing a Remix EP to benefit Planned Parenthood. I try to use my music for social good, and no one fights harder for the rights of woman than they do.
