Hi Nikki, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I opened Pier 31 12 years ago. I was the only Female and Black-owned restaurant, bar and entertainment on the lakefront of Chicago.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been smooth. Funding, equipment and staffing.

I am the former President of the Laborer Local 1001 Union.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Opening a restaurant on the beach was a huge risk. I used my retirement savings to do so.
