Meet Nikki English of The SheShack in Compton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki English.

Nikki, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
The SheShack originally started in October 2017 when I returned to Los Angeles from living in Aiea, Hawaii. I’ve been working as a hairstylist/makeup artist since 2000. I grew tired of working in other people’s salons and decided to step out on faith and build my own from the ground up (with no money lol). This is where I was tested as a person AND a business owner. I lost a lot…BUT I gained a lot too…mostly confidence! But once I started to not let what I didn’t have stop me, the blessings started rolling in! I now have my own salon, an online beauty supply store (HairSweetsbynke.com), and I also have a Whipped Shea Butter product line in the works.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. I had a business partner that made deals with people that couldn’t be trusted, so that put a halt on some plans in the beginning. But I wanted my own salon BAD! So I kept pushing. Because I didn’t have good credit or money, I couldn’t hire the pros, so I had to hire friends, family, and “shade tree” contractors to help me get my salon together. Oh! My garage is my full salon😊. Needless to say, I had to lose close family friends, I lost money, and I had to do a lot of the work myself which prolonged the process. But now here I am, a million YouTube videos, blood, sweat, and tears(literally) later in my own fully functioning salon. The ShEShack!

The SheShack – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The SheShack specializes in natural hair and makeup. Mostly known for my “old school” shampoo, press and curl. I am most proud of the fact that I was able to watch my business grow from a dream to a place that is literally growing into something that I didn’t see coming! What sets me apart from others is the human experience, my clients aren’t just a means of money, they are family. The homey atmosphere and peaceful vibe.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
When I had my first Client Appreciation Day and I was able to give back to my clients in a way I was never able to.
