Meet Nikita Chan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikita Chan.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I am currently working at Nickelodeon as a background designer up an upcoming movie.

I came to the US about 11 years ago from Macau, China. I always love to create my own world through pencil and paper and doodling everything I saw. When I graduated from high school, I was very lost with what I want to do in the future. One day, my friend brought me to Art Center’s graduation show, that was the first time I realized there are such a career as a designer/artist in the entertainment industry. that was the day that I found what I was looking for.

I went through four years of Art Center in the major Entertainment design. I thought it will be easy to find a job in the animation industry after graduation, but life was never that easy. For the first year, I was freelancing here and there for game and advertising, not until nine months later, I got my first in house offer in animation. It was at DreamWorks for Boss Baby, after that, I moved on to Kipo and after that now I am in Nickelodeon. 🙂

Please tell us about your artwork.
I create art to tell a story or deliver a message.
For work, I am a background designer working for an animation movie helping to set the tone of story backgrounds. For personal, what I do can be varied. It can be in digital or in traditional media like oil/gouache.
I hope people can understand art can be in many different forms, it can be a statue, a finished beautiful rendering, or even a chicken scratch when it serves a purpose that the existence of it has meanings. 🙂

We often hear from artists that being an artist can be lonely. Any advice for those looking to connect with other artists?
Network, be in an in house job is my best advice. Surrounding with people you look up to or appreciate.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
Here is my website https://nikitadraws.com/, unfortunately, most of my professional work is not allowed to share yet, but I do have most of my personal works on the website. If you can share your thoughts with me about art, design and anything related, it will be a great support. 🙂
