Today we’d like to introduce you to Nika Roback.
Nika, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Interior design is my second career. I received a bachelor’s degree in Texas for Marketing. During that college experience, I took assessment tests that continued to say you have a proficiency for art but I didn’t know in what capacity I could be creative. After graduating, my jobs were in sales but for artistic related companies such as advertising, web design and film production. While working on films, the set designs and tapping into my own creative skills through metal sculpture made me realize interior design was my passion. It also dawned on me that I remembered my mother’s friends by their layouts of their homes. There wasn’t a design program I liked in Texas so I moved to California to attend UCLA for interior design. During school, I worked at Expo Design Center as a kitchen and bath designer. At the end of school, I met a man and moved to New York City and continued my career as a kitchen and bath designer. Even while working for companies, I completed projects until finally going solo in 2012 in NYC. Due to family obligations, a relocation back to California occurred in 2013. My business currently still specializes in kitchen and bath remodeling with an extended focus in real estate investing. I have always wanted to rehab properties. There is a general contractor with previous rehabbing experience ready to team up with me. I am looking forward to this new direction and fulfilling a dream that even preceded my interior design journey.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest obstacles I have had is relocating to new areas. I feel I have had to start fresh several times building up new clients and resources. The other challenge is the new landscape of social media.
UNIK Interior Designs – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I specialize in kitchen and bath remodeling. I have been asked many times what is your style. I know that some designers follow this concept but my answer is that I listen to each of my clients and provide the best outcome for the style that fits them. I feel that what makes a good designer is the ability to create a vision in many different styles. I had a client that purchased a Tutor style home and I researched the elements of that style, took the client’s needs and desires then infused with my aesthetic to transform their living and dining room into an exciting space we all loved. Given my metal sculptural background and years engulfed in the NYC art scene, I bring an out of the box thinking to all of my designs. I have a deep passion for my work and have had many clients say I am more excited about their project than they are. I pride myself on providing great customer service above and beyond my client’s expectations.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
There is one client that stands out for me. She had recently moved back to NYC from Majorca Island near Spain and went through a divorce. The only direction she gave me was uncluttered which is a given for most designers. I actually wrote out an artist statement and selected water to serve as an inspiration for the transition she was experiencing. It was a true blank slate having to select every single piece of furniture in her 3-bedroom apartment. My talent was able to shine brightest with this project.
