Meet Nicole Robbins of Nikki’s Tennis Crew in Studio City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Robbins.

Nicole, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.

I grew up playing tennis at The Racquet Centre in Universal City. I am a Studio City local who played number one at Campbell Hall High School. Nikki’ Tennis Crew started when I graduated from Northern Arizona University in 1989 and returned to The Racquet Centre. When that location was turned into a shopping center in 1998 we relocated to Weddington Tennis in Studio City where we have been since. We organize and run teams and classes for all levels of juniors and adults. My passion is teaching people of all levels to play. I love teaching people who are “weekend warriors”. I believe everyone should be allowed to play and I offer scholarships to those who show the passion for tennis.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?

I would love to say it has been a smooth road but for ten months I moved my business to a different location that ended up not working out. It was probably the worst business decision I have ever made but the best personal growth one. I really learned so many amazing lessons about how the Universe works. Especially about how I am supported regardless of what I think is going on. When I returned to Weddington Tennis the transition back wasn’t totally smooth but Weddington Tennis was super supportive. I love the Studio City/Sherman Oaks community as this is where I have spent my entire life!! For the past two years I have been coaching at my alma mater Campbell Hall high school as the JV high school coach I am happier than I have ever been. During this transition, I learned so many lessons about who I am and what I want in life. I feel my business understanding has gotten even better from the lessons I learned and I am making choices now that really support me and my program.

Nikki’s Tennis Crew – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?

My business is a tennis school but there is a huge human component. I specialize in teaching people of all levels how to play tennis from beginners all the way to college players. I am most proud of the community I have created around tennis. I call us “The Crew”. I have taught for so many years and have watched many of my students grow up from young kids to parents of young kids who I now teach. I call many of the kids “my children and grandchildren”. I have many team building opportunities which people meet and become friends outside of the court. I feel what sets me apart is my authentic concern for the player both on the court and off. I have formed many wonderful relationships with my clients. I feel my teaching style is very intuitive. I have my master’s in spiritual psychology and am studying to be a practitioner so lessons are more than just tennis. One student paid me double one day. I told her that is way too much. She said that is what her therapist charged and I was more insightful than her therapist.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?

My proudest moment is watching my students achieve both on and off the court. My adult students winning their USTA matches.  Watching my junior students win high school/college matches, going to their school plays, going to their weddings and now teaching their kids! This week two of my students texted me they got accepted to college. Some of my favorite text to receive!  I have traveled to Oregon, Arizona, North Carolina to attend graduations and multiple cities for weddings! My students are more than tennis lessons. They are family!
