Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicole Jessen.
Nicole, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I bought my first business, a brick, and mortar when I was 20. It was a high-end women’s boutique. I owned it for 13 years, before selling. I moved to Santa Barbara, CA for something different, and decided the fashion bug was still embedded in me. I met my husband, went through IVF to get my gorgeous daughter, Eleanor, and decided to start Love Threads. I wanted Love Threads to be solely online. I wanted to be able to spend as much time with my daughter, considering the struggle we had gone through to have her.
One thing I didn’t realize at the beginning is how hard online would be compared to having a brick and mortar. I had to dig deep into the marketing world, in a whole new way. Instagram was one of my main sources of marketing. At the time, which was 2013, Instagram was just becoming the rage. I had to also try to figure out who my customer was. Not an easy task when you are trying to foresee this over the internet. I had my ups and downs, but as we all know, if you own your own business, there are always going to be ebbs and flows.
Today, Love Threads is an online women’s boutique for all ages and sizes. We offer 24/7 customer service and will go out of our way to deliver satisfaction to our customers. Everything takes time, and growing Love Threads has definitely taken time and lots of hard work. This is my passion, and having an online boutique has made me grow in ways I never knew possible. You can never really sit back and relax, but my personality isn’t really the relaxed type. 🙂
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not always been a smooth road. For one, having a child and a business is never easy and two owning a business is never smooth sailing. As long as you accept those ebbs and flows you can accomplish anything. There are always going to be tough times, but those are also the times that make you grow, and that’s a huge gift!
Please tell us about Love Threads.
Love Threads is an online women’s boutique. We buy clothes with every woman in mind. I myself have been many different sizes in life, and one of the main things I keep in mind when buying is can anyone wear this?. Every woman wants to feel amazing, and we are here to help. We are known for excellent customer service and for being such a small company and offering 24/7 customer service. We are also known for treating people the way you want to be treated.
I’m most proud that I built this little business when I was going through IVF. I didn’t have a huge cash flow, my mind was trying not to focus on the fact that my husband and I were trying to make a baby with not a 100% guarantee. I worked day and night to code my website, buy the clothing, and work on the marketing aspect of the business.
What sets us apart is that we are very supportive of other women, even doing the same thing. I help lots of women start boutiques and other businesses. Competition is a word I stay far away from. Compassionate is the word I welcome into my world.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I would dress up in my mom’s clothes and high heels and walk around our neighborhood. I would have all of the neighborhood kids watch my so-called fashion show.
