Today we’d like to introduce you to Nicholas Schwaigerlehner.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nicholas. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am someone who has worked hard my entire life to try and achieve the dream of starting my own business. I grew up in Montrose, and this place is my home. I have been teaching people robotics, programming, math, and science for many years now. I already knew I had a passion for technology when my family got its first computer back in 1999. I followed that passion as I grew and got older. In middle school, I remember being called out of class to help the teachers throughout the entire school with their technical issues. Later in high school, I founded the robotics team, a team which is now a worldwide contender and has won a world championship tournament. During that time, I even did work for neighbors and friends with setting up home networks, building computers, and any other technological needs. In college, I taught fellow students different subjects as a tutor and Teacher’s Assistant. All the while as I grew, I helped others along the way by teaching what I know. At first, it was simply to help out those in need, but it developed into a passion that I hope the world can benefit from.
After some time, I was finally able to start my own business, Technix Academy. I founded the company on April 20th, 2016. Our goal at Technix Academy is to teach children and teens technical skills to support them in learning Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematic (also known as STEM) fields. We want to give our students important tools and knowledge for a future where they will become the next generation making the world a better place. Our teachers are dedicated to passing on the knowledge and skills they possess, and to teach in an interactive way to ensure each student understands what they are taught. Technix Academy was started with the goal of passing on the passion for STEM knowledge to younger generations.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The only challenge and obstacle has been explaining the importance of learning STEM fields to parents. Many parents don’t have the personal experience to know how fun, and important that it is for every child’s future. Its once a parent see’s everything in person that they recognize how much their children will enjoy learning STEM activities. These types of activities didn’t exist not too long back, and to most parents, to explain something they themselves never really had experience having when they were younger, can be difficult. It is the parents that have STEM field careers themselves that know how great it is to start as soon and early as possible.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Technix Academy teaches a combination of STEM skills that give our students the experience and tools to give them an edge over their peers. We have courses for several experience levels, ranging from beginner to advanced, and have a great combination of fun projects and instructional lessons that will allow our students to have the best experience learning these skills. Our curriculum is adapted to teach each age group differently while ensuring all students learn the same skills. We give parents an assortment of different courses to choose from that can best match with their child’s interests. We offer the most diverse selection of courses that fall under the 4 main subjects of coding, robotics, software, and computer hardware in order to ensure that each student can learn what they want all in one place. Our goal is to work with students in a highly interactive environment to maximize the real world experience they gain.
Our curriculum changes with new technological advancements to have courses that set the bar for technological skills and are always up to date on what is currently being used in the fields that they will end up working in later. We support our local community with outreach programs and we support our students with their endeavors in STEM activities. The main thing to understand as to how we teach our students is not a typical classroom setting. We teach our students with a 1 to 3 ratio, one instructor for every three students.
They progress through our curriculum at their own pace with the guidance of our instructors. With this individual pace, our students never have to worry about falling behind or waiting for others. As well, scheduling is very easy since with our tuition plans that provide blocks of hours to use at the parents own choosing, scheduling can be made for any time and day that we are open. We’re excited to give our students a foundation in an ever-growing technological world.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I always liked making things. Back in my early childhood, I just didn’t know what to channel that passion into. At that time the only thing that seemed to fit was being an inventor. I remember taking many lunch breaks at school to draw up ideas of what would be amazing and cool to build. I was a very imaginative kid. Later on, and as I grew older, I realized that many of the inventions I had thought of making were things that required lots of knowledge and skill with what exists around me. Everything technological fell within my interests. The only difficulty was that I was really the only one in my family and friends that had the drive and knowledge of technology, even as a young child. I learned everything on my own. I learned everything through the practice of using computers, software, and hardware. Around the age of 6 is when I started using the computer that the family got for the first time. Learning the basics of computer literacy. At the age of 12, I was using video and sound editing software to make videos for my school events, as well as animating with adobe flash. At 14, I started helping people with home networking, modding Xbox controllers and consoles, building computers for people, using Adobe Suite, and much more. It continued with this growth of knowledge to now, and I will continue this growth of knowledge until I am no longer able to. However, these were just interests of mine. Who I am at the heart, is a person who cares for others. I grew up under the care of my mother and grandmother and was taught the importance of what it means to help others through the loving care that they had for me. Without them, I wouldn’t be the person I am today. So once I was in high school, classmates of mine would start noticing that anything to do with STEM. So classmates started coming to me for help with math and science. I, of course, loved the opportunity to help my friends. However, what truly arose from these experiences was the idea that I can use the knowledge I have gained through my lifetime to help others. So now, I teach all my students with the same care that was shown to me in my childhood, in the hope that they will become prepared for the future, and that if they set their mind to it, they can achieve anything.
