Today we’d like to introduce you to Neysa Garcia-Muhammad.
Hi Neysa, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I spent a majority of my life knowing that I was a creative, but until a few years ago… I never imagined that I could be a creative professional. It always seemed like something that wasn’t accessible to me unless I could afford an expensive art school or a competitive internship. So, that’s how photography remained a hobby for me for over 10 years.
After college, I started a career in the tech industry and landed in product management roles after a few years. Even though I was successful in those roles and had a positive impact on my team, I knew that I wasn’t in an environment that genuinely saw me for who I was or valued my strengths. I have a lot of soft skills, I’m a great listener, and I love collaborative work that brings people together. Corporate environments foster competition, politics, and power plays.
I knew that I wasn’t great with that kind of thing, nor was I interested in acquiring those skill sets. So, in the middle of pandemic madness, my husband, Tabari, and I decided to launch Ginger and Carrot Productions. We both had a similar relationship with creative work. We thought to ourselves, “It’s time to give this a real shot.” It’s been almost 3 years now, and through everything we’ve experienced, it’s easily one of the best decisions we’ve ever made together.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Starting Ginger and Carrot Productions was not smooth. I can only speak for myself when I say that starting a business had a significant learning curve. It’s not just about doing great work and having an amazing portfolio. We had to learn about what brought us joy, what kind of clients we wanted to work with and provide an easeful client experience for them.
Of course, in business, that means looking at the money, pricing things in a way that is empowering for us and positioned to the right clients. We had to learn how to sell, market, talk about what we do, and really embody the identity of being founders. That process is easily the most challenging part because it requires an internal shift in mindset.
For us, this wasn’t a freelance gig; we wanted to build something that could provide a living for others one day. It’s our dream to provide someone else’s dream job. With that mindset, we had to learn a lot through trial and error how to build the foundation of our production company.
We’ve made so many mistakes, from writing contracts that weren’t very protective to working with clients that weren’t the best fit for us. Every single experience teaches us something about the business that we needed to learn in order to move forward, so I’m grateful for them.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Ginger and Carrot Productions creates documentary-style media and brand identity for conscious brands with a big mission and an even bigger community. We do a deep dive into our client’s brand narrative and deliver creative assets that align with their business goals. We also give them supporting assets that they can easily repurpose for social media content and continue to drive their marketing roadmaps.
We are champions for storytelling because they create connections with people, and that’s our number one value as a creative team. One of the most powerful things a company can do is acknowledge the humanity that is in their team and their audiences and build a bridge between the two. This is how you can create lasting impact.
Most brands think about increasing revenue, growth, or scale. When you increase joy, connection, and social impact, often these other KPIs exceed your expectations.
The number one thing that I want people to know about us is not just about what we do but how we do it. You won’t find another production company that invests so much energy and resources into building a culture like ours. We stand out because we make people feel safe to be themselves on set. That can be experiencing joy, frustration, shyness, or insecurity. There’s room for it all, and we hold sacred space for the totality of who we are so that we can produce amazing work.
We are accepting clients for documentary work, brand identity, and videography projects. We begin every engagement with a free strategy call to get a sense of what your goals are and the best course of action to get there. You can schedule your strategy call at calendly.com/
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
The most important quality of our success is listening to our intuition. There are so many strategies and tactics out there. You can find an evidence with all of them proving that they work.
The truth about business is that there is so much serendipity and magical moments that we can’t all explain. So, we follow our path and allow the right opportunities to come our way instead of forcing something that isn’t a fit for us. That can be a client relationship, a particular kind of offer, or a process flow in our business.
So much of business is making gut decisions and trusting that things will work out in your favor in the end.
