Today we’d like to introduce you to Nava Dordick.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Nava. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Ever since I was a little girl, I was fortunate to have a very liberal single mother who always gave me the freedom to do whatever I wanted in my bedroom. It was my domain. I took that privilege and ran with it. Every few months I would redecorate” my room and since I was all but maybe 14 years old, I had a very limited budget. Thus, I would use as much “cheap creativity” as I could. My mom would take me to swap meets and flea markets and I would turn my room into different themes, colors and textile lounges.
As I got older, I had to work to pay my way, so I went to the conventional (law office) route and never had the opportunity to explore my talents outside of my own homes.
Now, I am grateful to be able to purchase projects, do minor or major remodeling, and then sell for profit. For me, being able to do what I have loved doing since as far back as I can remember is a dream come true.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I am a very tactile and visual person. I can measure all day long, but I really need to see and feel what I am doing. Needless to say, once in a while, I have purchased an item that was way too large or ridiculously small – lesson learned – measure measure measure – draw draw draw. But, this doesn’t mean that one should not use their instincts, so there is a happy medium there as well. Measure, but if you’re feeling it – go for it!
About 10 years ago, I came across an Indian-styles suspended hanging day bed. I purchased it for my daughter’s bedroom, called the handyman to mount the chains into the ceiling studs and covered the chains in chandelier chain covers. My daughter loved it as I chose very whimsical bedding and a white fluffy rug to give the illusion of a magic carpet ride.
However, I did get some criticisms from some of the adults in the family. Years later, I saw the exact same concept in Architectural Digest as well as other interior design magazines! Pioneer? Perhaps. But more the thinking out of the box kind.
Please tell us about Nava Tamar Designs.
I am known for taking projects that are “dumps” and transforming them into beautiful spaces. I guess it is the ability to walk into a room and visualize what it can be by being realistic about the space. Others will walk into the same space with me and have no idea what to do. I literally can see what it will look like before anything is done. Most of the time, my “go to” is thinking outside of the box. Many times I have heard “well when you told me what you were going to do, I wasn’t sure about your choices and then seeing the final project I am blown away”.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
