Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathaniel Safchuk.
Nathaniel, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Even as a child, I was intrigued by music. It was easy to see how important music could be to interpersonal communication, and in helping bring people together.
Somewhere around about age 13, my parents offered me a choice of instruments to learn, and through some random twist of fate, I began classical piano lessons. My brothers started guitar and violin, and I eventually added drums to my lineup. Between us, we had most of the bases covered, and the lines between who played what eventually began to blur.
I eventually started playing in bands, and through touring and recording our own demos, I became very interested in the production and engineering side of things. Collecting and building equipment quickly became a passion of mine. I recorded all the projects I could find, and interned at several studios along the way to gain experience with different styles, instruments, and acoustic environments. After a few years, I felt I had amassed a good deal of knowledge and gear, and officially started my company in 2013.
What I love about music is its ability to help people communicate with others. Whether it’s forming lifetime relationships with artists or simply talking about why certain songs make you feel a certain way, I recognize the power and importance of music and sound in our lives. Studios are just buildings, and the instruments in them are just pieces of wood and metal, but with the right combination of people and skills, something magical can be created.
Has it been a smooth road?
Studio construction definitely wasn’t easy, and the learning curve for anything highly technical like this is pretty steep. The local market here in southern California is thoroughly saturated, and high end equipment is extremely expensive. There’s a lot stacked against you, so this type of work truly has to be a labor of love. I’ve been very fortunate to have some amazing artists trust me with their music, and I never take that trust lightly.
The process of making music is quite personal, and a different experience for everyone. I’m constantly humbled that people open up and allow me to work with material that comes from a very private place in their lives. Whether it’s a podcast interview, a full length venture, a single song, or only a few tracks, I immerse myself completely in the content and the process. It’s very rewarding to help people tell their stories, and I’m thankful to be able to do this type of work.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with Nathan Safchuk Audio – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Nathan Safchuk Audio is a professionally equipped studio that provides tracking, editing, and mixing services. I offer a relaxed environment & competitive pricing, and use a hybrid blend of state of the art analog and digital equipment to achieve the highest sonic quality.
Different than other studios, I function as both the owner & head engineer. This allows me to maintain complete control over such things as scheduling, communication, equipment, etc. We offer a traditional live/control room setup with an additional vocal booth. Since we don’t offer multiple rooms, our clients always have access to everything when they arrive and throughout the project. Sessions are private and by appointment only, as are studio tours, but I love meeting with artists and other engineers to discuss their individual projects and needs.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Among my favorite parts are the weather, the scenery, and the atmospheres. The least favorite things are traffic, and the distance between certain areas.
