Meet Nathalie Gordon; Photographer in West Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nathalie Gordon.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Nathalie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started out in commercials. My first job out of university was as a runner for a production company. I worked my way up to production manager/producer and alongside my day job I would shoot and edit music videos for local and new musicians.

After only 2 years I quit my job, I felt a regular go to 9-5 wasn’t for me as I don’t really like being told what to do. So I left to shoot music stills and edit music videos. I thought I wanted to be a director but after about a year or so I preferred shooting stills.

During this time my mum took over a hair salon so I began to shoot hair for her. I really enjoyed it creatively and I expanded into Hair and beauty. I now mostly shoot beauty, specifically macro beauty whereby I focus on parts of the face – Lips are my thing!

I moved to LA 2 years ago as I wanted a change and more sun! Everyone thought I was crazy as I had never been to LA before but I went ahead and made the move. I just knew I wanted to try something different so here I am!

I recently had my first art show here in LA whereby my macro lips where blown up to 4ft x 3ft, the feedback from the show was so amazing that my prints are now available for sale via my website. I’m working on 2 new collections both involving lips and a 3rd that is focused on macro beauty in a more natural form.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I don’t think any road for anyone is smooth. There are always struggles and aspects of your job that are tough. There are days when I get into a creative black hole and struggle to be inspired or even want to shoot. I swear every other week I want to quit photography (for no real reason) and then I get out of It and get excited again.

For me getting in front of the right people has been my biggest challenge. People are “busy” and there are a million other photographers out there all chasing the same people/clients/dream etc. I’m a big believer of always doing better than my last shoot so I’m always shooting fun projects and striving for feedback.

I would say the worst part of this journey is when you do reach out for some honest/constructive opinions someone can instantly dislike your work without giving you a solid set of reasons as to why. It can be so heartbreaking to hear anything negative about your work but over time you just learn to develop a tough skin. I’ve had lots of people, agents, clients tell me not to bother with photography and to find an alternative career. That’s like a double stab wound to your heart especially when it’s your passion.

Please tell us about Nathalie Gordon Photography.
As a photographer, I specialize in shooting beauty. I do also shoot fashion, lifestyle and music/portraits but beauty is what I naturally am drawn too. I love playing dress up lol.

I think what sets me apart from others is not only my style but also my personality and work ethic on set. I don’t waste time messing about with one look when I know I had got the shot 10 minutes prior.

My style is described as hyper-realistic – kind of perfect yet believable. The majority of my images are bright and colorful but very clean and sharp.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Nothing.
