Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Sanchez.
Nate, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
When I was younger, my mom bought herself a Nikon D40 for our family road trips. I hated that camera as much as any kid hates getting their picture taken. The camera sat on a shelf for most of its life, only really coming out to play when the whole family was around. One day I decided to take it with me when my friends and I went skating after school. I snapped a few pictures and I fell in love. I started to steal that camera every day after school and document my town and my skater friends. I found a way to get the pictures onto my Instagram and I felt like I could share my world with everyone who cares to look. There was something so rewarding about offering people a look into life. Six years later, we still have that camera, and it resides on my shelf. Without that camera, I wouldn’t be writing this today.
Has it been a smooth road?
Conceptually, the journey has been a dirt road, and I’m driving in reverse, and it’s night time. The only smooth part was the consistency. There is always a camera around. No matter what stage of life I am at, what I am interested in, or who I feel like I am, photography stays consistent. Light and color work the same way every day. Conceptually, I am liquid, filling whichever mold life decides to be at any given moment.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a photojournalist with an emphasis on portraiture. I’ve studied light and portraits for two years. I am known for my contrast in light and in themes. I am most proud of my education. Having studied for two years under the department chair of my photography school, I’ve learned not only how to take pictures, but also how to illustrate an exact emotion for any occasion.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles has extraordinary opportunity. There is room for everybody. Starting out, the answer is authenticity. You must make work for yourself and trust that people will respect that. Celebrate your community, show off your love, and never stop making your own art. Los Angeles is a dangerous place in that people are so worried about what others think of them, that they make work that isn’t an accurate representation of their community. People can see right through that, and that’s where we can all improve.
