Meet Nate Ryan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Ryan.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
In terms of what I currently do on YouTube, I started my channel not knowing what I wanted to create content-wise so I began trying out lots of different styles of content. I failed at most things I tried, but I noticed that I usually received more views when I talked about alternative music. A lot has happened since then, but that’s how everything started for me.

Please tell us about your work.
I create short videos about bands and artists, which is a very common subject matter for people to talk about on the website, so I try to give myself an edge by talking about smaller to medium-sized alternative acts as a way to make myself stand out. Since I was a young teen, I’ve been into music that doesn’t get a ton of mainstream coverage, and I’ve always been upset that some of my favorite bands and artists never get talked about. So I’ve taken it upon myself to be the person that talks about and offers information about the music I love most.

I don’t want art to be forgotten, and it seems like YouTube will be sticking around for a bit, so that’s where I’m currently broadcasting my work.

In ten years, I want someone to look up an old, obscure emo band from 2013 or something and find a highly-detailed, high-effort production which gives that artist the praise and voice I think they deserve.

I’m very passionate about spreading the word about music that I think is great and want to help artists grow and flourish in their career. If just one person watches a video of mine, and that artist gains a new fan, I feel like I’m accomplishing my goal.

My video style is what some people would refer to as a “video essay” which I don’t really deny that I create that style of video, but it was never really my intention. When I first started making videos about artists, it would feature me in the video talk, but now, it’s just my voice with media/graphics on top of it.

I never set out to do that style, but over time, I found that for me, it’s the most efficient way to communicate and convey my ideas/messages.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
It’s tough; there’s really no other way to say it. There are going to be days when you come home from an eight-hour shift and have to put in another six to eight hours of work towards whatever creative project you’re working on.

It’s going to be extremely tough, you might cry, and you’ll probably be tired. But guess what? You CAN do it. That’s right, you can.

If you want something, you CAN go out there and make it happen. I’m not trying to sound like a motivational speaker right now, but it bums me out that people don’t do stuff just because they think they can’t do it. If someone like me can make progress towards my creative goals, then anyone can.

I’m far from where I want to be creative but I’m working hard every single day to get there. You can do the same thing, I promise.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
