Today we’d like to introduce you to Nate Huntley.
Hi Nate, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I moved to LA in August of 2021 and, like everyone, had lofty dreams. The pandemic was a chance to reevaluate what was important to me in my career and I came up the concept of my four “pies.” People kept asking me “what do you want to DO?” and I would respond with my main passions which were acting, writing, music, and comedy and generally was met with a response like “Wow that’s a lot…” But I’m unwilling to give up any of them! Every time I go to my journal and ask ‘should I give something up?’ the answer is always a resounding no. So, currently, I have my fingers in a bunch of different pies, which can sometimes feel like I’m stretching too far but my dreams coupled with discipline has proven to be quite the recipe for creativity.
As a struggling actor in New York, I grew tired of constantly asking for jobs when I have so many ideas of my own so I created a YouTube sketch comedy channel called Argyle Gargoyle. It started as a pandemic project but since moving here it has blossomed into something much bigger. I teamed up with my friends Sara Spadacene and Sean Liang to level up the quality of the content and we even won a few awards last spring for a short film we did called “A Wonderful Life?” That was very exciting. On top of that, I have several feature film scripts in various stages of completion and am currently working on a musical… because… why not? Music-wise, I’m writing consistently, gigging every once in a while, and constantly trying to become better at my craft as a songwriter thanks for my friends at Thinking Outside the Blocks.
TL;DR – I keep myself busy. I feel like I’m in the middle of a chapter so maybe come back to me when I’m a little further in the book.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Is any road perfectly smooth? That’s like asking if you can draw a perfect circle. (Hint: you can’t.) There are always bumps in the road but I think that’s what fuels us as artists. I’ve had my fair share of rejections, periods of self-doubt, and moments where I would hedge my bets, but now that I’m in my 30s, I don’t have the patience anymore to get bogged down by that anymore. If I do, it’ll hinder me from creating my next thing, whatever it may be.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
At my core, I’m someone who makes people want to LAUGH. But I also want to make people FEEL. One of my favorite movies, Mrs. Doubtfire, does both. It is simultaneously hilarious and gut-wrenching. That’s what a good comedy is to me. Something that will make my stomach hurt from laughing then makes me cry at the end.
Anyone can tell jokes. What sets a good comedy apart is an emotional connection.
