Meet Natasha Bacchus

Today we’d like to introduce you to Natasha Bacchus.

Natasha “Courage” Bacchus

Hi Natasha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
I grew up competed track and field as a former Deaf Olympian, Indoor Track champion, Pan Am Games for the Deaf, and Masters Games. Track saved my life and boosted my confidence because I faced uncomfortable zones related to language deprivation, ableism, racism, and stereotypes against my intersectionality. American Sign Language is colonized. I am a grassroots activist, visual artist, and decolonization in progress to explore what colonization tools I learned. I participated in a lot of theatre, film, and television as Netflix “Coroner” and CBC gem “21 Black Futures” and received a Dora Award for Art Accessibility. I have a passion to work with hearing artists who willing to learn more about accessibility, building collaboration for full accessibility with Black Deaf artists like me. My vision to abolish colonialism system who divide underrepresented IBPOC Deaf artists in Theatre, TV, and Film. My favorite motto” Laugh on, Move on.”

Please call me Courage.

(My sign language version as my first language)

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Never been smooth road for me because this society is failing me for facing unexpected barriers I have to break down for my rights. Struggles is exist. I have benefit to understand how to break barriers by educating ignorances people who have not acknowledged I require accessibility to have a sign language interpreters, lived captions, and hearing people can sign fluently.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My transformation from former Deafolypican to visual artist I am doing theatre acting, mixed media, art accessibility consultant and Deaf Theatre Interpretation. I am mostly proud of my first piece exhibited at Wildseed Center this month. My piece of full track medals, photo pied of myself, families, track and newspapers and flag of Guyana.
