Meet Nancy Hahn of Cut Sew Stitch in Claremont

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Hahn.

Nancy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started this company to share my immense love of the art of fashion. Like a lot of things in life, fashion has a less glamorous side that is very hard many of us to morally accept. I believe that fashion/garment production needs to take care of the people who are entrenched in its less glamorous aspects, usually women in less developed countries who are the main earner in non-traditional households. All too often their situation is the result of tragedy.

Without addressing this unfairness, I could not feel good about my love of fashion. I think educating the public about the way clothes are made is the way to help the people stuck in the lower rungs of fashion industry. Cut Sew Stitch was launched to help figure out this dilemma.

Educating/teaching customers about sewing is not our only goal. We want to introduce a different way to create clothing that partners with the public. We will be launching an ethically produced line of yoga wear in the fall. We are trying to lower the cost of production by eliminating excess/unwanted inventory. We will launch the line to the public and ask them to order before the clothes are actually produced. If this becomes successful, we will launch another line where the consumer will choose the fabric and designs of our collection. We will start production on a small, local scale, our larger goal to take our concept international, incorporating production in countries that could desperately use the investment.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been without bumps. We struggle to make ends meet on a daily basis as we launch our plans. This interview has been a huge help in terms of getting the word out. We only have one full-time, and two part-time employees engaged in this ambitious plan. There are times when we doubt our goals but we are very hopeful that our vision will catch on.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Cut Sew Stitch, a sewing studio – what should we know?
Our vision is unique and to date, I am not aware of any other garment company trying to operate the way that we are. While ethics, will guide our production methods, we are not unaware that our ultimate success will lie with the soundness of our design/production. In other words, if the customer does not like the product we offer, we will be dead in the water.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We have many people along the way that have had a huge role in our success. Most importantly, all of our customers who have so loyally supported us since our launch. We are indebted to them.
