Meet Nancy Easton

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Easton.

Nancy, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started in the creative field as a graphic designer. I spent years working alongside professional photographers- retouching their photos, etc. I quickly became jealous they were working at gorgeous venues with couples in love while I spent much of my time behind a computer. I gradually made the switch. Not even sure how it happened to be honest. My husband and I were moving from Las Vegas back to our hometown (Kansas City) at the time and it seemed like the perfect time to try a new career since we would have the support we’ve always had in the community we’re from. I experimented with being a photographer of everything at first to see what felt right. After photographing my first wedding, I was hooked! My obsession with weddings continues to grow and it’s now 99% of my work, with the occasional family portraits peppered in when time permits.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My path has been relatively smooth. The biggest challenge I’ve faced in my business has been myself. My husband and I love to move around and experience new places. It can sometimes feel like starting over every time I take my business to a new state/country.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I photograph weddings big and small. I’m known for my dramatic lighting in wedding portraits, which is of course my specialty. I never shy from dark venues with minimal lighting, in fact I prefer it and it’s what draws couples to my work. What sets my art apart from others is my ability to create a final image better than what we’re seeing in person. All of course, done with at least one light off camera, sometimes multiple. What I am the most proud of, however, is teaching other photographers these techniques. I love spending time with other photographers, some new to the game and those who have been around a while, and showing them how creative our work can be when they experiment with lighting and that it isn’t intimidating like most think it is. Teaching this skill and growing my team in the process has been something I’m most proud of. The more tools we have the better we can serve our couples on their wedding day.

If you had to, what characteristic of yours would you give the most credit to?
Hands down, the client experience is the most important quality I bring to the table. I’m sure to communicate and lay out everything clearly for my couples. I work with my couples a lot on their timelines. I want them to have realistic expectations of how long things take and lay out the day so it flows naturally and is enjoyable, and doesn’t feel like they’re just ‘taking pictures all day.’ I want quality portraits over quantity. Spending time with their guests and loved ones, enjoying all parts of the day AND getting high-end luxury portraits in the process is our client experience- with EVERY wedding. Every couple should walk away having taken in the entire wedding day and know we have created timeless artwork to look back on.
