Meet Nancy Baron

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nancy Baron.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
My work in film production in Chicago prompted a long ago move to Los Angeles. My passion for documentary filmmaking led to my current interest in fine art still documentary work. Although I love to travel, I like to discover and document the exotic worlds near home, which is now both Los Angeles and Palm Springs, CA. Although I’ve lived in both places for many years they never lose their fascination for me. Fine art book publisher, Kehrer Verlag, has published two books of my Palm Springs work, “The Good Life > Palm Springs,” and “Palm Springs > The Good Life Goes On,” in which I document a side to the modernist life style in Palm Springs that is not always apparent to the occasional visitor to this desert paradise.

Please tell us about your art.
My art is a quiet study of facets of the places where I live. When something interests me, I’m driven to examine further until I find something about my subject that I may not previously have understood or even noticed. In editing my images, I begin to see a pattern and from here I fill in the blanks to help the viewer to understand what draws me to document a particular aspect of a place and its people.

My way of working is inspired by the documentary filmmakers, Albert and David Maysles, with whom I had the privilege of working. In their filmmaking style of Direct Cinema, they let the story reveal itself to them over time rather than being self-directed by a predetermined thesis.

My work has a hopeful bias which I like to think is a respite from the noise around us. I’m very much about simple things in a complicated world and hope my work will encourage the viewer to slow down and take a look around.

As an artist, how do you define success and what quality or characteristic do you feel is essential to success as an artist?
The definition of artistic success is personal and varied. For me, it’s about making work that I feel represents my vision in a way that is emotional, thought-provoking, and aesthetically appealing.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
There are three monographs of my work – two of which (“The Good Life > Palm Springs” and “Palm Springs > The Good life Goes On”) are published by Kehrer Verlag and available in stores, museums and online, including Amazon. My third monograph, “Beautiful Trailertown” (about trailer park life in Palm Springs) is a limited edition, self-published book plus archival pigment print that is available at the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center and here: http://nancybaron.bigcartel.com/product/beautiful-trailertown
