Meet Nana Feng of Diamond Bar

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nana Feng

Hi Nana, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
12 years ago, I first picked up my camera after my son was born. While searching for photography tips online, I discovered the world of “newborn photography.” I was captivated by the images—sleeping babies posed adorably in various positions. In that moment, I knew I wanted to create those kinds of photographs.

My journey began with a combination of online and in-person workshops, studying poses, experimenting with lighting. I work throughout day and night, comparing photos to find the best angles. Over time, I became known among the local mom groups. More parents reached out to book sessions for their newborns, and eventually, I became a full-time newborn photographer.

Today, I’ve photographed over 2,000 babies, and I can still recall many amusing moments during sessions, including “accidents” when babies would unexpectedly poop all over their parents—or sometimes on me! But once everything calms down, we patiently wait for the baby to give us that big, sweet smile, and that’s when I capture the magic.

Many parents call me “the baby whisperer.” There’s an unspoken connection I feel when I hold these little ones in my hands. I can sense whether they’re hungry or uncomfortable, and with a few gentle pats, I can often tell whether they’ll stay asleep or wake soon. During sessions, I also find myself sharing parenting tips with many new parents.

Over the years, I’ve had the honor of participating in competitions, winning international silver and bronze awards, photographing celebrities, and even having my work featured in People magazine.

I truly love what I do.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
In the early days, newborn photography wasn’t as popular as it is now. My biggest challenge was earning the trust of parents, convincing them to hand over their precious baby for a photo session. I’ve encountered parents who argued before stepping into my studio, fathers who sat nervously beside me the entire time, and mothers who cried whenever their baby cried. But by the end of each session, families always left happy and satisfied. I would say, “I hope you had fun,” and they would respond, “We had a wonderful time! It was so enjoyable watching you work.”

Today, newborn photography has become a cherished milestone for many families, much like wedding photos. As the number of newborn photographers continues to grow, my current challenge is figuring out how to stand out and ensure parents choose me.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Many people think being a photographer is as simple as pressing a button, but the real work lies in everything that happens before that moment.

The most important factor is safety. I would never place a newborn in any position that’s even slightly risky—whether it’s lifting them off the ground or forcing them into an uncomfortable pose.

Every prop and color used is discussed with the parents in advance, as these are their memories to cherish. I want them to be completely satisfied with the final result, so I pay close attention to every detail—from the placement of each petal and the baby’s posture to the angle of the light, the folds of the wrap, and even the knots in the hat.

Trends in newborn photography have evolved over the years, from natural lighting to studio lights, from flat lighting to the use of shadows for a more storytelling effect, and from bare skin to swaddled babies dressed in adorable outfits. I’m always learning and drawing inspiration from fellow photographers’ experiences.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
As a full-time baby photographer, my days are filled with studying, traveling to clients’ homes for all-day shoots, and countless hours of photo editing. I am deeply grateful for the support of my family, and it brings me joy to know my income will support them.

For the past 12 years, I’ve maintained my passion, welcoming every family with enthusiasm and treating every baby with patience and care. The joy I see on parents’ faces when they receive their photos is my greatest motivation. For those families who have worked with me for 5-6 consecutive years, I’ve had the privilege of watching their children grow up. Every positive review, thank-you message, and Christmas greeting strengthens my love for my profession.

Most importantly, seeing the love and happiness captured in these photos and knowing they’ll be treasured by families for years to come is what makes me happiest.
