Today we’d like to introduce you to Ms.Toi.
Ms.Toi, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started out as a hip hop dancer but I was a very good writer and was waiting for the best opportunity to get noticed. I rap on instrumentals like jacking for beats Bonnie and Clyde by ice cube since he was a dope artist and writer I wanted to meet him. My first manager was Brooke Payne Ronnie Devoe’s Uncle from New Edition. I had my first studio experience recording with Ronnie Keila and Moe Z that led to more features. I worked with Emanuel Dean on his group the Militia and brought in Mr.Tan to do the Burn remix and get our first recording deal w Red Ant. That was just the intro I knew Terry Carter very well and he gave me Ice Cube and Mack 10’s contacts.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Of course, it hasn’t been smooth but these legendary moves can’t be denied. I’ve had to work around men this whole time while playing my position and strong women get the short end of the stick at times. I didn’t want to hoo bang so I met with Ice Cube to feel his vibe which was dope we played each other music and I moved forward. Later I was called in by K Mac of the Conrad’s to do a feature for Ice Cube and it would become one of his biggest hits.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
As an artist from the beginning, I’ve always had control of my destiny. I sat in my sessions not as an artist smoking and drinking I paid good attention to my producers how they recorded and mixed my vocals. I sat in the meetings to better understand my deals I never sat back and let management controls how I was treated and that causes a lot of tension. My specialty is publishing because longevity starts with knowing how I get paid in the long run not just the upfront money. How can I make money for the long haul if my voice is being used. So my company specializes in consulting publishing and how to release your intellectual property.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I definitely have a support system in place and it started when I wanted to start my label. Although many people around me fell off I consider their lack of confidence in me the reason I make money now doing what they said I couldn’t do. I was told I was old and nobody was listening to my music but didn’t know I had a photographer that knew more about the internet than I could imagine. We started having meetings about my YouTube channel my platforms where my music could be found etc. I got excited that somebody besides myself knew how the new system worked. I started my label 2014 with a new studio new beats from all of my producers and then I started recording The mission was to start releasing my catalog so I can start seeing results. I dropped two albums 2014 I Am a Warrior part 1-2 slow motion was better than no motion.
