Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Blachley, Richard Horowitz, Henry Diltz, and Timothy White.
Morrison Hotel Gallery was founded by former record company marketing executive Peter Blachley, music retail industry professional Richard Horowitz, and legendary music photographer Henry Diltz, along with the brand’s fourth partner, world-renowned photographer, author, and director, Timothy White. The concept of Morrison Hotel Gallery originated with the Diltz archive and the eponymous Morrison Hotel album cover that was taken by Diltz in 1969 for The Doors.
With its flagship gallery in Soho, New York City, the gallery has always maintained a presence in Los Angeles and is now suitably housed in the rockstar’s hotel, Sunset Marquis Hotel – this incarnation is the brainchild of White who is well known for documenting the charisma of an astounding list of Hollywood royalty.
In 2016, Morrison Hotel Gallery joined forces with Fleetwood Mac founder and rock icon Mick Fleetwood to open our newest gallery in Fleetwood’s General Store in Lahaina, Maui as well.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Overall, the business and its growth have been a pretty smooth process and development. The nature of our business stems from the overall effect of music resonating emotionally with people. Consequently, what we do at Morrison Hotel Gallery is show a visual side of that emotional reaction that resonates in a similar way. Additionally, I believe it is our extreme attention to detail and good business with a grassroots focus, along with our good relationships with our photographers and a simple business structure that has allowed us to steer clear of major challenges.
Morrison Hotel Gallery – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Morrison Hotel Gallery is the world leader in fine art music photography representing over 125 of the most highly acclaimed music photographers — those who made, and continue to make, an indelible mark on music culture with photographic portrayals of the industry’s most influential artists.
We curate hundreds of the world’s most exceptional collections of rare and iconic music photography for international exhibition and sale. Working with the photographers themselves, the family estates, and often legendary artists in music who are also photographers, Morrison Hotel Gallery brings to light unseen archives, drawing from a vast and growing catalog of jazz, blues, and rock genres dating back to the 1940s and up to today’s contemporary artists. Hollywood and sports photographs are also included in many of the archives represented.
Most recently, Morrison Hotel Gallery is thrilled to be sharing its collections with interior design leaders, as the team believes that these one-of-a-kind pieces can bring just as much joy and life to interior spaces as they can to music and culture enthusiasts alike.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Timothy: Personally, I am very proud of both my successful photography career and my partnership with the gallery. It was a great moment when I became represented by Morrison Hotel Gallery earlier in my career and then eventually became a partner in the gallery which has made for a wonderful life experience and growth in my career overall. This has given me the opportunity to follow through with my own art and work while learning and collaborating with my contemporaries and peers.
