Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Saunders.
Morgan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started my production career in Washington, DC, at National Geographic. I moved up through the ranks there, working on several unscripted and blue-chip titles. I had the opportunity to send people all over the world to capture amazing stories. When thinking about production and everything it’s taught me to date, one of the most notable experiences was telling a cameraman’s wife that I needed his dental records. We were sending him to Palau to film in one of the most remote areas. We needed his dental records just in case something went wrong, and we needed to identify him.
From Nat Geo, I went into more traditional reality production. I worked for a few smaller production companies on several cable titles for History, Travel Channel, and TV One. I reached the point in DC, where I wanted more, more TV experience. So I was able to make my way to Los Angeles and started working for REVOLT TV, where I managed their studio and west coast production. It was just the challenge that I needed. Once I got my bearings straight in LA and started to get my sealegs, Netflix reached out to me about an open position in their Unscripted department. Then BOOM, two years ago, I started at Netflix, and I never looked back.
Has it been a smooth road?
Heck NO! So many challenges. In DC, I felt like I wasn’t reaching my full potential; I was yearning for more. So moving to Los Angeles, was the answer. Once I started here, meeting friends, finding my network, and looking more opportunities was even more challenging than I thought it would be.
We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Working in production, meaning all the logistics behind your favorite TV shows. From managing budgets, insurance, safety, tax incentives, HR, payroll, and, most importantly, creative expectations. I’m most proud of what I’ve been able to learn in the last few years from working at Netflix. The volume and the diverse slate of projects keep me on my toes.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I think LA is the best place to cultivate your career in production. There are so many opportunities. I’d also say with the influx in Social Media, anyone can be creative now, so you aren’t really limited by the possibilities.
