Today we’d like to introduce you to MOONZz.
MOONZz, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Music has always been my happy place. I’ve played piano since I was five, so melodies were always circling my head, at school, during recess, even in my dance classes. I would come home and sink into the piano until dinner. I played when I was feeling overwhelmed with schoolwork. I played when I needed to zone out.
I played when I was feeling on top of the world. It became a daily part of my life at an early age. I grew up in the most loving and supportive family, who pushed me to do everything and anything creative and artistic. From dance to musical theater, art classes to piano lessons, I was always busy and thoroughly enjoyed it. I was also blessed with a wide variety of music at a young age.
My dad and I would sing James Brown, Tower of Power, or the classic Frank Sinatra on my rides home, as loud as we possibly could. My mom would play Rolling Stones, Tom Petty, Tori Amos, Sheryl Crow, and my sisters played the most eclectic music for me at a young age: Radiohead, Erykah Badu, DEVO, Beck. It instilled this love for figuring out the melodies on the piano, and that’s how I started writing in the first place.
While studying in college in Boulder, Colorado, I discovered my love of electronic music, going to shows almost every night. I started experimenting with the KORG Kaoss Pad, vocal looping and writing in my free time. When I performed, it was in that moment I realized I captivated audiences. It inspired me to launch MOONZz a couple of years after graduation.
MOONZz is an extension of myself: fearless, confident, fierce and loving.
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing ever comes easy. It’s definitely been full of lessons. I’ve learned to trust myself and my voice more and especially to lean into myself. I’ve learned to work harder than I thought was possible, without expectations.
I think people try to take advantage of you, sway you in a direction they want for you, especially when you aren’t clear cut on what it is that YOU want for yourself and your career. I struggled and still continue to struggle with the creative process and ultimately releasing music because I feel so attached to my work. I’ve always been sensitive, and it’s a vulnerability that comes with being an artist.
I’ve learned so much about myself, about having a vision, and running with it, even when people around you are constantly questioning or ripping it apart. Everyone has their opinions… and their feedback can either shake you (poke you, to get a response) or shape you (encourage you to think, but not destroy your own journey/your progress).
Songs are so raw, it’s like the most vulnerable parts of me. It’s definitely something to get used to.
So, as you know, we’re impressed with MOONZz – tell our readers more, for example, what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
Hi, I am MOONZz, a singer/songwriter, pianist, vocalist, and producer. I write music to bring love into this world, to inspire you, to reassure you that you are powerful. I want you to feel limitless and loved when you listen to my music.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the mountains, cafes, valleys, the little family-owned shops, bookstores, the neighborhood florist. I grew up in the SFV so living on the Eastside now, I almost feel a new sense of home and belonging. I have my scared spots to hike, drive, and write that gives me time to think.
The growing homelessness is hard to pass every day. If I could help every single one with a supportive and loving place to stay, a job that excited them and instilled a sense of belonging, and meals aplenty, I would. I think that’s the hardest part of living here.
Everyone wants to feel a sense of belonging and LA is quite a vast, cold place if you’ve lost your way.
