Today we’d like to introduce you to Monti Washington.
So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Brooklyn born, Arizona native, I grew up sleeping in parks, crack houses, and really struggling in poverty. At a young age, I was separated from my mom and was placed into group homes mixed in with a few foster homes where I learned a lot of hard lessons. During my time jumping from foster home to foster home, I experienced physical abuse which included spanking on the knuckles until it bled and being locked in a room for three months.
Much of this earlier abuse led to a battle with depression and this also was a result of me taking Special-Ed classes until I was in high school. But, after some help and focus, things started to come full circle for me. I went on to college to collect two degrees and discovered my passion for acting and public speaking.
I created Montivation to shape my own form of motivation. My motivational speaking platform is equal parts empowerment, entertainment, and engagement. Its everything I’ve amassed from my life put into an engaging and empowering form of public speaking.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It hasn’t been a smooth road at all. But, I wouldn’t change it for the world. We have this belief that “our experiences form us”. I believe our experiences don’t “form” us but rather “inform” us. Every experience is merely information either physically or emotionally. Because of the hardship upbringing I had, it molded me into the resilient person I am today. Moving out to LA nearly ten years ago, I can admit things were not easy, but I pushed through it, I took the necessary classes I needed to take for acting, networked, built a team. And as a result, has been able to star in three shows and am a lead on Tyler Perry’s newest show BRUH on Bet Plus.
Please tell us about Montivation.
So, in addition to having my speaking engagement platform Montivation, I am known for being an actor. I am most proud of where I am going as a motivational speaker and actor. One of my shows is renewed and I am excited about how I can interrupt the digital space with motivational speaking at colleges.
What sets me apart from others is that I am both a motivational speaker and actor. These skills help me with the ability to interview, perform, and not be afraid of large crowds.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
It’s been a combination of hard work, support, blessings, and teachings from my upbringing.
