Today we’d like to introduce you to Mitchell Johnson.
Mitchell, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a singer, dancer, choreographer, and actor and am in LA to do it all! I am from Houston, TX and went to School or Vocal Performance and Marketing in St. Louis, MO.
After college I moved to LA, not necessary for a career in the arts, but because I wanted to be around the creativity and opportunity. I started taking dance classes again and meeting people through them. It was then I started to realize that the people I would admire and mimic on YouTube for years are just like me and a career in dance was a possibility.
I pursued only dance for a while and neglected my singing side. It wasn’t until the end of 2017 when I decided to put myself out there and audition for a musical at a local theater company and landed a supporting role! From then on, it gave me the push I needed to know I can do it all.
Since then, I performed in four other shows, booked a show at Disneyland, modeled in a national ad campaign for Oakley and choreographed an amazing youth production of In The Heights. I am finally able to see my future as a creative artist.
Has it been a smooth road?
It has definitely been a rough road, more internally than anything. Like most people I was really insecure about my talents and kept comparing myself to others doing the same thing. I had to realize that one, nobody’s life is perfect and everyone is on their own journey of growth.
When I was comparing myself, I was dimming my own light. I now know I have story and perspective to share that is worth telling and will bring happiness not only to myself but those who are willing to receive it.
I also felt I had to be what other people wanted me to be to succeed, but it was when I started just being myself and let go of the fear that I found success.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
Right now I am pursuing musical theater, but I am known for being unapologetically me! I have a very androgynous style and love showing a balance between both my feminine and masculine side. I love that I am able to blend what I love about both genders and express it in my art.
It has allowed me to be able to connect with so many different types of people from all walks of life and create art for people to enjoy. But if I’m being honest, I’m mainly proud that RuPaul tweeted one of my dance videos… twice! Lol.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and the least?
I love all the opportunities. I know there is always something I can be doing or experiencing that I’ve never done before. I feel like I am constantly surrounded by creative people and that really gives me a push to regularly create.
The thing I like least is tooooo many vegan options! joje. I don’t like how we are in this like LA bubble. I feel like we are disconnected from other cities and the way other people live life.
