Meet Missy Wuertz of Hermosa Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Missy Wuertz

Hi Missy, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Photography has always been a part of my life. Ever since I can remember, I have loved capturing moments through a lens. In high school, I was the one always carrying a camera, documenting memories with friends. My passion continued into college, where I served as the historian for my sorority, capturing every event and milestone. I vividly recall the anticipation of dropping off my film at Kodak and waiting the two days to get my prints back.

When my daughters were born, I faced a new challenge. My point-and-shoot camera couldn’t keep up with their fleeting smiles and giggles. I knew it was time for an upgrade. Enter the Canon Rebel with its kit lens—a game changer. The faster speed allowed me to capture those precious moments I didn’t want to miss. This experience rekindled my love for photography and set me on a path to turn my passion into a profession.

Inspired by local photographers, I decided to start my own photography business, Missy Marie Photography. I began by immersing myself in learning. I read extensively, attended local Photoshop classes, and reached out to my wedding photographer for advice. His best tip? Read the camera manual from cover to cover. I did just that, taking copious notes and practicing every day. I offered free photoshoots to anyone who would let me and carried my camera everywhere.

One pivotal moment in my journey was attending a five-day workshop in Texas, hosted by three of my favorite photographers. There, I learned about client interactions, business practices, marketing strategies, and advanced technical skills. This workshop was a turning point, providing me with the confidence and knowledge to take my business to the next level.

Fourteen years later, I run a thriving and successful photography business. I specialize in photographing people, portraits, events, and products. My love for photography remains as strong as ever. It’s not just a job—it’s my passion and where my heart truly thrives. Every click of the shutter is a reminder of why I started and why I continue to do what I love.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My journey in building my photography business has been mostly smooth, but not without its challenges. Like many business owners, I’ve grappled with the common struggles of avoiding overextension and ensuring my work doesn’t take over my life.

There were times when I took on too much work, especially while raising my daughters, leading to more hours than I intended. Balancing my professional and personal life required a lot of trial and error. Through these experiences, I learned how to find the right balance between working and not working, ensuring that my business thrived without compromising the precious moments with my family.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in portrait and event photography, and I’m known for my artistic and storytelling approach. My goal in every photo shoot is to capture genuine interactions and emotions, creating images that tell a story.

I take great pride in the longevity of my business, having sustained it successfully for so many years. One of the key elements of my work is my ability to connect with my clients. Beyond technical skills, I focus on making my clients feel comfortable and at ease in front of the camera. This connection allows me to capture authentic and relaxed moments, resulting in photographs that truly reflect their personalities and experiences.

Who else deserves credit in your story?
Mentors, supporters, and advocates have played a significant role in the success of my photography business. Other photographers in my community, friends who are photographers, and connections made through online photography groups across the nation have all been invaluable mentors to me. Their guidance, advice, and shared experiences have shaped my journey and helped me grow both creatively and professionally.

Living in a small community like Hermosa Beach has its unique advantages. When you have children participating in dance, sports, classes, and school activities, you end up knowing a lot of people. Many of these connections have become my clients, and their support has been instrumental. They advocate for me, refer me to others, and serve as cheerleaders for my business.

I am incredibly thankful for my village in Hermosa Beach. The referrals and recommendations from friends and clients have been a cornerstone of my business’s success, and their support means the world to me.
